The College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security & Cybersecurity (CEHC) at the University at Albany is seeking an Academic Advisor to oversee academic advising and support for its Informatics undergraduate major. This position will provide academic advisement to 300-400 undergraduate INF majors and support to minors upon request. The Academic Advisor will coordinate communication to our students regarding registration, advising, permission numbers, and other general advising information, as well as follow up and support students in need of academic and personal success support.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Oversee advisement for undergraduate INF majors, including reviewing degree audits, recommending courses, and helping to keep students on track for timely degree completion.

  • Assist in academic planning to adapt to students' abilities and interests.

  • Advise INF second majors, minors, and intended majors as needed.

  • Convey and interpret the University's academic rules and regulations, academic prerequisites, programs, majors, and courses of study.

  • Provide academic advising and referrals to assist students in utilizing university policy to protect their academic status, including petitions, withdrawing from courses, late withdrawals, transfer equivalence, etc.

Other responsibilities:

  • Provide consultation and guidance to faculty regarding complex advisement issues

  • Resolve and process course substitution and waiver requests for undergraduates majoring in INF

  • Advise transfer students by reviewing degree audits, transfer evaluation reports and educational plans; prepare schedule suggestions and resolution of transfer equivalent issues for courses in the INF degree programs and concentrations.

  • The successful candidate must have a commitment to student-centered, developmental and holistic advisement, and must be comfortable using information technology to assist in advisement.

The position will report to the Chair of the Informatics major and the Director of Academic Advising.

This position has a 12-month calendar year obligation.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.

  • One year of professional experience or relevant graduate-level employment with a college student population.

  • Experience in providing academic and personal advisement or case management and outreach to support students in meeting educational or career goals, specifically with students in transition or on academic probation.

  • Strong interpersonal, writing (as assessed by application materials submitted), and oral communication skills.

  • Applicants must demonstrate an ability to develop inclusive and equitable relationships within our diverse campus community.

  • Applicants must demonstrate an ability to support diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and belonging relative to their role.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.

  • Two or more years professional academic advising experience.

  • Experience working with special populations including, STEM, international, transfer and/or historically excluded populations of students.

  • Proficient in Spanish or other non-English language.

Professional Rank and Salary Grade: SL-3, $56,000
