TIAA Managing Director, Territory General Manager, Institutional Relationships in ALBANY, New York

The Managing Director, Territory General Manager, Higher Education is a general management role responsible for the integrated service/sales delivery teams for the Upstate-Western New York territory of the Northeast Region. The role has broad, overall responsibility for running all aspects of a territory within a region which roll up to a business area of the Institutional Relationships Business. This role will develop strategic business plans, provide leadership for integrated, cross-functional teams, and execute on business plans to meet customer needs and achieve strategic and financial goals.
The Large/Mid/Higher Education organization within this territory includes client responsibility for the mid to large complex clients over $15M AUA. Focus on existing client base growth through expansion of services; client retention. The Upstate-Western NY territory will manage teams working with 111 clients with combined assets of $40+billion, including our largest enterprise client. Key criteria for this role is ensuring retention and growth of existing business through the retail offer and the broad array of TIAA products and services; displays relentless drive to understand the industry, the clients, marketplace, regulatory environment and shifts in client need.
This role develops business strategies to create enterprise growth opportunities through existing business clients. Decisions also impact existing client relationships. This role is key in leading integrated teams responsible for maintaining client relationships and expanding our products and services through existing business sales for other TIAA products (i.e. work place banking, planned giving, insurance etc.) The nature of this role has impact at the enterprise level. Through association affiliation, this role has some influence over strategic domestic policy development.
Leads integrated teams - Provides the vision and leadership for a team of cross-functional professionals; translates the vision into strategic business plans by institution; understands the role requirements to build a team which can deliver strong results; develops collaborative partnerships with internal and external stakeholders
Manages client strategy and financial success for book of business: Develops and is accountable for multi-year financial goals; responsible for profit and loss (P&L); develops strategy and/or business plans. Builds end-to-end business plans that optimizes growth and profitability over a multi-year time period (sizes market opportunity, articulates strategy, financial projections and holistic execution plan)
Demonstrates a commercial mindset - Understands the competitive marketplace and its impact on the business; adapts business solutions, products/services to evolving customer needs to ensure strategic competitiveness; drives to capture market share; delivers growth. Displays relentless competitive drive, operating with a sense of urgency to surface innovative solutions and drive future growth
Displays enterprise perspective - Delivers effective business operations across multiple regions and/or functions which contribute to broader organizational success; makes decisions informed by a deep understanding of the enterprise priorities and interdependencies between business areas
Integrates across the broader organization, integrates the members of the 'One Team' to grow and retain institutional clients, serving their needs and drive deeper penetration of client based across TIAA products. Takes a lead role facilitating integration amongst Inst. Retirement Sales, Individual Advisory Services, Client Services Group, Asset Management, etc.)
Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience
FINRA Series 7 and 63 and FINRA Series 24 registrations within the first 120 - 150 days after start date and as a condition of employment
A minimum of 8 years of experience within the Financial Services industry
Extensive knowledge of financial services, retirement products, and market, competitors, marketing approaches and strategies and distribution channels
Strong knowledge of political environment, government leaders and legislative environment
Proven track record of successfully managing high performance teams at a senior level
Financial knowledge and the ability to develop and manage budgets
Master's Degree preferred
Experience leading a large, regional organization
10+ years in the financial services industry in institutional consultative sales, investment and client relationship management experience
Industry certifications and designations (CEBS, CFP, ChFC, CFA, Juris Doctorate, etc.)
Excellent oral and written communication skills, including presentations to senior level audiences
Experience managing in a matrixed environment
