The Research Foundation for SUNY at the University at Albany Postdoctoral Associate (R24-40) in Albany, New York

Location: Albany, NY Category: Research Foundation Careers Posted On: Fri Aug 9 2024 Job Description:

Description of Duties:

UAlbany's Laboratory of Redox Biology and Signal Transduction, headed by Dr. Ben Boivin, is seeking to recruit one postdoctoral researcher. Research in our lab focuses on deciphering how redox modifications of proteins influence phosphorylation-dependent signal transduction in biology and pathologies. We strive to understand the link between the structure and the function of the Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase (PTP) family members that become turned off by oxidation to gain insight into redox signaling mechanisms underlying disease initiation and progression. We recently identified an approach to reactivate the oxidized and inactivated form of PTP1B (Londhe et al., 2020, Nature Chemical Biology), and showed that the oxidation and inactivation of PTP1B in the heart unleashes a thyroid-hormone dependent hypertrophic response and heart failure (Coulis et al., 2022, Science Signaling). In the position offered, the postdoctoral researcher will use their knowledge, and unpublished data from our lab, as a basis to explore how PTP1B becomes inactivated in cardiac hypertrophy and to apply novel therapeutic strategies to reactivate PTP1B in vivo. The candidate will learn and use biochemical, biophysical and molecular biology approaches (e.g. immunoblots, immunoprecipitations, microscopy, redox assays, proteomics, Flexcell, AAV-mediated gene-therapy, etc.) in vitro, in cardiomyocytes and using animal models. In this NIH-funded position, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to present their work at national and international meetings, to participate in collaborative projects and to be trained in successful grant writing.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in Biochemistry or related field

  • Motivated candidates with interests in cellular signaling and cardiac hypertrophy

  • Demonstrated ability to perform, analyze, interpret and think critically about experiments in the context of a broader research project

  • Candidates should have at least one published manuscript, or a manuscript currently on a preprint server

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team
