The Senior Underwriter will calculate and verify premium rates for renewal and prospective accounts. Understanding and expertise in the pricing of different funding arrangements and advantages and disadvantages to both the account and carrier are required. This includes an understanding of the strategic implications of the competitive marketplace and the product offerings in order to make sound underwriting assumptions in the rate development process. It also includes a high level understanding of the impact the Senior Underwriter's decisions regarding risk assessment have globally on CDPHP's goals when making decisions on specific groups. This position will also require performance of financial and actuarial analysis.
Bachelor's degree required. 4 years relevant experience may be substituted for degree.
Bachelor's degree from a four year accredited institution required. Bachelor's degree may be substituted for four years demonstrated in-depth relevant underwriting experience of managed care products and services with large account management, including personal interaction with clients and brokers.
Advanced knowledge of experience premium rate calculations for group health insurance. Understanding of differences between community rating, community rating by class, and experience-rated group health insurance products. Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, technical procedures or government regulations.
Excellent organizational, problem solving and decision making skills with risk assessments.
Advanced knowledge of computer spreadsheet software such as Excel or Lotus and database management tools such as Access.
Ability to think creatively, especially in conjunction with competitive analysis skills and strategic planning. Analytical skills to develop and interpret actuarial data and reports.
Ability to take the lead and work independently on projects through completion and maintain accuracy. Demonstrated ability to lead a team in a short term project. Ability to work effectively with deadlines is essential.
Effective verbal and written skills with ability to produce documentation which exhibits appropriate grammar, as demonstrated in a letter of interest and resume. Ability to write strategic business correspondence.
Ability to interact with external customers and internal staff in a professional manner.
Demonstrated ability to analyze and provide resolution to complex underwriting related inquiries and interpret all employer reports, CDPHP's health plan contact language, riders, schedules, underwriting policy and procedures with adherence to underwriting guidelines, turnaround timeframes and insure regulatory compliance is required.
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions in one-on-one or small group situations with customers, sales, underwriting management and other employees of the company.
Ability to calculate figures such as discounts, compound interest, proportions and percentages and apply basic concepts of business mathematics and algebra in underwriting problems. In depth knowledge of mathematical applications used in underwriting function is required. Knowledge of actuarial derivation of underwriting applications is required.
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in oral written, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions in most standardized situations with several abstract and concrete variables. Creative solutions to new situations caused by marketplace, merger, medical patterns, etc.
