What Your Job Will Be Like:

The Air Delivered Weapons Systems Tester Development Department (7256) and the Ballistic Missile Tester Development Department (7255) have an immediate opening for a passionate and motivated R&D Electrical Engineer to join an exciting, dynamic, and highly technical team. The selected candidate will be a member of a team that designs, fabricates, qualifies, and deploys sophisticated system-level nuclear weapon testers for the Stockpile Surveillance Program.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Design equipment used to emulate the delivery sequences of nuclear weapons in a laboratory setting.

  • Lead or collaborate within a multidisciplinary team of design engineers, systems engineers, technologists, and subject matter experts.

  • Design data-collection equipment to capture many normal and exotic signals, generated by the tester or by the unit under test.

  • Define custom cables, boards, chassis, or racks.

  • Integrate and troubleshoot tester systems used to monitor the health of the US Stockpile.

  • Validate the tester design against customer requirements.

  • Test weapon systems, subsystems, or components.

    Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant will be required to work onsite in Albuquerque, NM. Some travel is required for this position.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in Electrical Engineering or a relevant STEM field, plus one (1) year of directly related experience; OR Bachelor’s degree in stated field, plus five (5) years of directly related experience.

  • E xperience with analog and digital circuit design and analysis.

  • Experience creating and interpreting design definition drawings (e.g., wiring diagrams, power distribution diagrams).

  • Experience using common electrical laboratory equipment (e.g., oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, arbitrary waveform generators, etc.).

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance and Sigma 15 access, which may require a polygraph.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in above stated field, plus four (4) years of experience; OR Bachelor’s degree in the above stated field, plus eight (8) years of experience.

  • Experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Leading or participating on high performing, multidisciplinary teams

  • Electronic testing and troubleshooting

  • Custom printed circuit board design

  • Modeling and simulation

  • Programming (e.g., C++, C#, MATLAB, LabVIEW, Python, Java)

  • Interface design (e.g., electrical–mechanical, hardware-software, component-component)

  • Electronic fabrication

  • Designing, developing, and qualifying complex electronics and systems

  • Requirements analysis

  • Demonstrated ability to work safely in a laboratory setting.

  • Ability to comprehend large amounts of information / strong attention to detail.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Active DOE Q-Level security clearance (or DOD equivalent).

We are the premier test equipment engineering capability for the Stockpile Surveillance Program. We design, develop, and sustain qualified test systems used to evaluate the safety, security, and effectiveness of the nuclear weapon stockpile. These departments provide an opportunity to learn about the U.S. Nuclear Security Enterprise, nuclear weapon design and function, and the role of Sandia National Laboratories in the nation’s nuclear deterrence mission.

Security Clearance:

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

Position Information:

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
