Alfred University Electrician in Alfred, New York

This position is responsible for the reliable and safe operation of all electrical-related systems on campus.  Installs, tests, and repairs the life safety systems throughout campus.  Must be available for on call and overtime situations. This position has been evaluated for compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act and is subject to premium pay for all hours worked in excess of 40 in a payroll week. 

This position/title is covered by the CSEA, Local 749 union contract. The successful candidate will be a member of the CSEA, Local 749 bargaining unit.

Salary: $25.00-$28.00/hour, depending on experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for all electrical and life safety systems on campus, ensuring all are installed and maintained in compliance with the appropriate electrical and building codes.

  • Responsible for the purchase, design, and installation of new and existing systems.

  • Prioritize, schedule and perform work as requested on work orders from faculty, students, and staff.

  • Perform and maintain inventory of electrical department and perform some billing of materials.

  • Design the sizing of panels, conduit, wire, breakers, etc.

  • Insure all electrical installations meet electrical codes and will function safely.

  • Maintain fire alarm systems and smoke detectors per floor, room, etc.

  • Organize materials for the job and coordinate with other trades and any others who are in area when work is performed.

  • Repair and replace any defective electrical equipment.

  • Stock all buildings with various electrical supplies (lights, fixtures, etc.)

  • Troubleshoot electrical using test instruments, such as ammeter, voltmeter, ohmmeter, etc.

  • Use gas test meter, heat temp meter, and confined space meter.

  • Work on generators, boilers, heaters

  • Maintain all outdoor lighting to ensure night safety.

  • Make adjustments to electrical equipment, such as limits on overhead doors.

  • Inspect circuits and wiring for specified shielding and grounding.

  • Measure, cut, bend, thread, assemble and install electrical conduit, PVC, and black pipe.

  • Install, control, and distribute apparatus such as switches, relays, and circuit breaker panels and disconnects.

  • Install electrical contactors by sizing up equipment and using proper overload equipment and devices.

  • Repair and maintain elevators when applicable.

  • May prepare wiring diagrams from verbal and written instructions to accomplish a project.

  • Observe and inspect jobs in progress and once complete to ensure work is done properly and up to code.

  • Locate underground electrical, fiber, communications, and water using related testing devices.

  • Repair kitchen equipment.

  • Repair automatic fire doors and screens and automatic gates.

  • Maintain alarm systems.

  • Maintains a safe working environment within and around their facilities and associated equipment and supplies including, but not limited to, obtaining Safety Data Sheet (SDS) information pertaining to any hazards associated with their work environment.

  • Safety: Participate in safety training and comply with safety rules, regulations, and protocols.

  • Perform additional duties and assist with special projects as assigned.

    Requirements:

  • Formal Education:  Four year electrical journeyman apprenticeship preferred; two year technical degree or equivalent experience in related area will be considered.

  • Experience:  At least five years of experience if no apprenticeship.

  • Additional Knowledge/Skills:  Must be able to be trained in confined spaces, lockout-tag out Certifications, fall protection, blood borne pathogens, hazardous waste, and forklift.  Must have good interpersonal/communication, organizational, and analytical skills, and be able to interpret blueprints and schematics.  Must be able to work from heights, and work with multiple power tools (pipe threader, band saw, sawzall, drill press, grinder, etc.). Ability to lift 50+ pounds.

    Essential Functions:  With or without reasonable accommodations the incumbent must be able to read and write and speak the English language at a college level, be capable of performing sometimes complex mathematical calculations, statistical calculations and other higher mathematical operations, must be able to communicate with all levels of the institution in written and spoken form.  The individual must be able to work independently.  The ability to maintain regular and prompt attendance is essential to the successful performance of this position.  Other essential functions may be required.

    Physical Environment: Personal Protective Equipment must be worn when required.  A respiratory function test and the ability to use respirators may be required.  Stairs and uneven surfaces may be present; Artificial lifts, etc. may or may not be available.  The position may require the incumbent to walk outdoors in all types of weather to other buildings or offices located on the campus.  The Campus is located in an area that contains numerous hills and slopes and may not always be fully accessible for mobility impaired individuals.
