Course Description

The Program in Computing for the Arts and Sciences is seeking to hire one (1) GSI in the Fall 2024 academic term to lead concurrent project/studio-work and grade assignments for COMPFOR 111.

COMPFOR 111 - Computing's Impact on Justice:

Computing has had a significant global impact. To study and critique that impact, students need to understand the fundamentals of computing, framed in this course as manipulation of text, creation of algorithms, and generation and analysis of Web pages. Students learn computational concepts, write programs with a focus on purpose (not memorizing syntax), and develop the skills to understand and communicate with software developers. Students will explore the justice implications of computing concepts, algorithms, participants, programs, and skills.

Responsibilities*

The course will be composed of two weekly 90-minute sessions that include lecture and project/studio work. All GSIs are required to attend the lecture and concurrent project/studio work . (Verify your own course schedule againstthe schedule of classes (available March 1) (https://ro.umich.edu/calendars/schedule-of-classes) for the course to which you are applying as a GSI. All GSIs are required to attend the lecture and lab times as posted.) Note that both lecture and studio sessions are scheduled as in-person instruction.

? Hold at least 4 office hours each week.

? Grade assignments, per lead faculty instructor?s direction.

? Meet weekly with the lead instructor and respond promptly to emails.

? Additional items listed in fraction calculation form

Required Qualifications*

? Enrolled in good standing as a graduate student at the University of Michigan.

? Available to attend the scheduled lecture times as outlined in the Job Responsibilities above.

? Have previously taken these courses or equivalent courses, and have demonstrated expertise and interest in subject area.

? Experience with Canvas.

? If the language of instruction at a student?s undergraduate institution was not English, they must be evaluated by the English Language Institute (ELI) for English proficiency and either pass the GSI-OET or have this test waived by the ELI before they can be eligible for a GSI appointment in LS&A.

Desired Qualifications*

Previous experience teaching courses in computing is desired.

Previous coursework in critical computing or the ethics of computing is desired.

Previous experience as a GSI is desired.

Decision Making Process

The course instructor will make the hiring decisions in consultation with the Program Director. We hope to conclude the search for this position and extend an offer by July 19, 2024.

Selection Process

Applications are reviewed, and decisions made, based on each applicant's knowledge, experience, and past teaching record. Preferential consideration will be given to applicants:

? with relevant academic preparation for teaching the course material

? with previous experience teaching courses in computing to LSA, or liberal arts, students

? whose field of study has relevance to computing.
