The OR Nurse Mentor is an experienced registered nurse of the interdisciplinary care team who works to improve clinical practice through mentorship and coaching. The OR Nurse Mentor establishes a caring relationship with a novice nurse as a trusted counselor, guide, role model, and teacher, while providing opportunities for personal and career development, growth, and support to the less experienced individual. The nurse possess and demonstrates advanced skills and expertise in the operative setting. The OR Nurse Mentor serves as a coach and mentors peer nurses using their advanced skill set and expertise while supporting the RN in their role of:
- Assists with assessing planning, implementing, evaluating and if necessary, delegating patient care for a specified group of patients.
- Collaborates with physicians, medical professionals and other staff to ensure quality of care.
- Provides collaboration of care for the patient entering the perioperative suite.
- Creates an environment of belonging and inclusion.
- Assists with assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating and if necessary, delegating patient care in the perioperative suite.
- Demonstrates effective critical thinking, problem solving, and conflict management to achieve desired outcomes.
The OR Nurse Mentor utilizes the nursing care process consistent with their license and/or certification including initiation of culturally competent continuum of care including inpatient, outpatient and community settings. The Registered Nurse is responsible to oversee any necessary coordination of the interdisciplinary plan of care and provides for its consistency with the medical treatment plan. The patient care process includes:
- Assessment - an orderly process consisting of the identification, gathering and organization of subjective and objective data pertaining to the patient/family/significant other, including physical, psychosocial, spiritual and cultural.
