Job Summary of the MRI Technologist

The MR Technologist is responsible for performing MR exams in accordance with standards and practice set forth by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology and Radiology Department policies and procedures. Additionally, he/she demonstrates knowledge of human anatomy, disease processes and functions, patient care, positioning, principles of magnet safety and protection, quality assurance, specialized techniques, and adheres to all policies. The MR Tech demonstrates knowledge of appropriate patient care and recognizes patient conditions essential for successful completion of the procedures.

Responsibilities of the MRI Technologist

  • Consistently produce scans of optimal diagnostic quality on patients ranging from Neonatal to Geriatric age groups.

  • Follow established scanning and filming protocols.

  • Operate MR scanners and related equipment efficiently and effectively.

  • Complete quality scans in a timely manner, effectively organizing and prioritizing work flow to meet STAT and urgent demands while continuing to meet OP customer standards.

  • Demonstrate proficiency in scanning trauma, acute and challenging patients; possess skills to modify positioning and scanning factors when standard cannot be performed.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of disease processes and produces studies that optimally demonstrate related anatomy.

  • Solicit patient cooperation by providing patient education about procedure and expected sensations before and throughout exam.

  • Demonstrate competence in using the power injector; verbalizes limits of use.

  • Scan patients of all ages, tailoring exam to the age/size/weight/special needs of patient.

  • Complete required documentation on forms, logs, work station and Meditech.

Qualifications of the MRI Technologist

EDUCATION:

  • Required: Associateā€™s Degree in Radiologic Technology

  • Preferred: Completion of courses in Magnetic Resonance Imaging and cross-sectional anatomy

EXPERIENCE:

  • Required: One year of experience as Radiology Tech in an acute care setting or 1 year MR experience

  • Preferred: One year of experience performing MR procedures in an acute care setting

LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Registered Radiology Technologist (R) with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)

  • Current Advanced Registry in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) with ARRT

  • Current Medical Radiology Technologist (MRT) license with the Texas Medical Board (TMB) or Registered Diagnostic Sonographer (RDMS) with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS)

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
