HP Inc. Senior Audio Engineer in Austin, Texas

Job Summary

  • The role is responsible for leading the audio system development across multiple project teams in Hybrid Systems Video Engineering. This position oversees the complete process of product audio design and development for videoconferencing equipment, primarily for room systems, including speakers, microphones, DSP/SoCs, drivers, and associated hardware. Working closely with audio software and tuning engineers, this role ensures product designs are compliant with development guidelines and standards including those for certification to Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Google and Tencent requirements. The role applies advanced subject matter knowledge of audio subsystems to provide perspective to cross-organization projects, drive innovation and integrate new technologies into products.

Responsibilities

  • Leads audio aspects of multiple project teams that include other hardware engineers and development partners (internal and external); responsible for all stages of audio hardware design and development for complex products, solutions, and platforms.

  • Designs and validates designs of various audio components and sub-systems through technical review of component specifications and acoustic testing.

  • Expands relationships with internal and outsourced development partners on audio hardware design and development.

  • Reviews and evaluates designs and project activities for compliance with technology and development guidelines and standards; provides tangible feedback to improve product quality.

  • Working closely with the entire audio team and conducting testing as needed, ensures that products will pass certification for the partner applications of Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Google, Tencent and others as required.

  • Identifies trends and opportunities for optimizing technical performance of products/solutions, quality enhancements and cost of delivery.

  • Provides domain-specific expertise, including overall audio/acoustic hardware and platform leadership, to cross-organization projects, programs, and activities.

  • Develops cost estimates, business cases, appropriation requests and plans for audio engineering projects.

  • Delivers professionally written reports, including analyses of complex audio/acoustic data that deliver key findings to enable data-driven decisions.

  • Drives innovation and integration of new technologies into projects and activities in the audio hardware design organization.

  • Provides guidance and mentoring to less- experienced staff members to set an example of audio hardware design and development, innovation, and excellence.

Education & Experience Recommended

  • Four-year or Graduate Degree in Electrical Engineering, Audio Engineering, Acoustic Engineering or any other related discipline or commensurate work experience or demonstrated competence.

  • Typically has 7-10 years of work experience, including at least 3 years of relevant design/development experience with audio hardware.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Audio component characterization - must have experience and advanced knowledge

  • Acoustic/Anechoic/Reverberant testing - must have foundational knowledge, experience preferred

  • Hardware and/or Component Design/Development - must have experience

  • Audio DSP technology - must have advanced knowledge

  • Audio amplifiers - must have advanced knowledge

  • Hardware architecture - must have foundational knowledge

  • Mechanical aspects of audio design (Impulsive Distortion, Rub & Buzz) - highly preferred

  • New Product Development - highly preferred

  • Microsoft Teams, Zoom or similar Audio Certification standards - familiarity is highly preferred

  • Interface protocols (USB, I2S, SPI, I2C, UART) - familiarity is desired

  • Programming experience in Python or C++ is desired
