Johns Hopkins University Journal Managing Editor in Baltimore, Maryland

The Department of Neurology is seeking a Journal Managing Editor . The position serves as the primary gatekeeper and editorial and administrative manager for the journal Cognitive and Behavioral Neurology, including soliciting authors and reviewers, editing manuscripts, coordinating the review process, reviewing final proofs, and promoting the journal.

Cognitive and Behavioral Neurology (CBN) is the official journal of the Society for Behavioral and Cognitive Neurology. CBN is a clinical subspecialty journal focusing on advances in the neurologic understanding of conditions that affect thinking, learning, memory, communication, and behavior. CBN submissions address clinical research, patient care, education, or professional advancement, and readers are primarily neurologists, neuropsychologists, and psychiatrists. CBN is a quarterly hybrid open access journal that is published both in print and online.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work independently in providing oversight of all manuscripts, peer review, post-acceptance editing, proofreading, and production.

  • Interact with authors on changes, agreement to copy right release and mandatory charges, deadlines, and production requirements.

  • Report to and serve as gatekeeper for the editor-in-chief, previewing manuscripts that he then evaluates for quality and appropriateness for the journal.

  • Conceptualize, prospect for, and commission new material for publication.

  • Identify potential authors for new materials and personally solicit new manuscripts.

  • Develop and maintain database of peer reviewers; appraise and select potential reviewers with the assistance of staff.

  • Edit accepted manuscripts and work closely with authors to finalize text, tables, figures, and supplemental digital content.

  • Write and edit non-scientific portions of the journal, establish design specifications, engage with outside vendors for publication production

  • Recruit, train, and supervise freelance or part-time manuscript editor as needed.

  • Collaborate with production staff in preparing proofs and proofreading.

  • Draft editorials for and develop special issues, invited articles and new features with editor-in-chief.

  • Update Instructions for Authors and introductory materials in CBN. May establish author guidelines, resource materials, and make recommendations of overall format and content of the journal.

  • Run editorial office’s administrative operations, including handling and recording all transactions and editorial correspondence, such as decision letters, setting journal policies, and maintaining editorial style guide.

  • Responsibility for oversight of some administrative function of the journal, e.g., basic copy editing of non-scientific portions of the journal, editorial board meeting content and scheduling, maintenance of on-line editing systems.

  • Recruit members to the CBN Editorial Board and engage them in CBN activities.

  • Communicate with and troubleshoot for authors, reviewers, editorial office colleagues, publisher’s staff, and the CBN Editorial Board.

  • Plan contents of issues in consultation with the editor-in-chief; track status of each item throughout the production process.

  • Meet production deadlines.

  • Draft updates for the journal’s website.

  • Draft marketing materials for CBN, including the X (Twitter) account.

  • Perform other duties, including occasional editing of divisional writing projects, as required.

  • Ability to edit for accuracy, structure, sequence, internal consistency, clarity, simplicity, reference checking, and format.

  • Ability to edit tables, graphs, and figures.

  • Proofreading skills.

  • Strong organizational, multitasking, project management, record-keeping, and problem-solving skills.

  • Self-starter who can run programs independently and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to deal effectively and diplomatically via e-mail with authors of all languages and backgrounds.

  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues.

Work Location

  • The Managing Editor can telecommute because all journal work can be accomplished online via email and through the online manuscript management system Editorial Manager. Most division projects are handled online and by telephone.

  • The Managing Editor may be required to attend occasional meetings at the division office in downtown Baltimore and may be asked to attend an annual neurology conference in the U.S. or Canada.

Supervisory responsibility

  • Possible supervision of Hopkins undergraduate/graduate students.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree.

  • Two years related experience, including experience with some aspects of the efforts and processes required for scientific journals, e.g. vetting potential reviewers, communicating with authors, formatting manuscripts, etc.

  • Additional education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expertise in use of scholarly tools, such as Zotero and Google Scholar.

  • Some familiarity with online journal production.

Starting Salary Range: $53,300 - $93,500 Annually (Commensurate with experience)
