Johns Hopkins University Research Technologist in Baltimore, Maryland

The Johns Hopkins University is seeking a Research Technologist within the Chua Laboratory to work on a focused research project in basic/translational neuroscience utilizing human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). The overarching goals of the project are to: (1) discover how the cellular pathway of autophagy is dysregulated in neurodegenerative diseases; (2) determine the connection between autophagy dysregulation and toxicity for vulnerable neuronal populations; and (3) identify novel ways to restore autophagy function in disease and are amenable for therapeutic design. The successful candidate will work alongside Dr. Chua to design, perform, and interpret experiments with these objectives in mind. Under the general supervision of Dr. Chua as faculty investigator, the candidate will be responsible for performing routine analyses and tests on animal or human fluids and/or tissue or cultured cell lines. Work requires basic use of scientific methods, procedures and techniques gained through previous training and experience. Uses basic understanding of theory behind experiments and applies basic analytical skills to implement assigned projects, and to identify and troubleshoot situations needing special attention.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Follows established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform experiments.

  • May require basic tissue culture, small animal surgery, genotyping, and/or cell separation methods.

  • Laboratory methods/techniques associated with protein, lipid or carbohydrate biochemistry or molecular biology.

  • Purifications; quantitative and qualitative analyses, and localizations; as well as other functional and enzymatic assays.

  • May perform recombinant DNA library construction; screening, isolation and mapping clones; oligonucleotide hybridization; plasmid subcloning, and/or screening DNA libraries.

  • Operates basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuge, thermocycler, pH meter, analytical balance, scintillation counter, spectrophotometer, light microscope, and/or utilizes laminar flow hood.

  • Utilize sophisticated instrumentation such as high-pressure liquid chromatograph and/or fluorescence or luminescence spectrophotometer.

  • Perform specific analyses using techniques such as column chromatography, affinity chromatography for protein purification, and/or ELISA's.

  • Operate lab computers for data entry. May utilize in vivo models in experiments.

  • Harvests primary cell cultures from blood and/or tissue specimens.

  • Maintains primary cell lines through procedures which may include passaging, cryopreservation, transfection and/or cloning.

  • Uses various software applications to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or test reports.

  • Prepares solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures.

  • Monitors inventory levels, orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, counts orders upon receipt.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.

  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience.

Starting Salary Range: $15.50 - $26.00 HRLY ($40,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
