Johns Hopkins University Research Technologist in Baltimore, Maryland

The Johns Hopkins University Neuroscience Department is seeking a Research Technologist who will work with a team that includes other technicians, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows to help in the analysis of oligodendrocyte dynamics and remyelination in the mouse CNS. Under the general supervision of a faculty investigator and other laboratory members, the successful candidate will be responsible for performing experiments and analysis involving mouse models.

Work requires the basic use of scientific methods and procedures and techniques gained through previous training and experience. The position requires a basic understanding of the theory behind experiments and the application of analytical skills to implement assigned projects, and to identify and trouble-shoot situations needing special attention. The successful applicant is one who has the ability to work well with a team of lab scientists as well as independently.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist in research to elucidate the molecular stratification of different classes of neurons in the CNS.

  • Perform in vivo two photon imaging of oligodendrocytes in mice.

  • Determine the density of oligodendrocytes in longitudinal imaging datasets.

  • Reconstruct the morphology of individual oligodendrocytes and their myelin sheaths.

  • Quantify changes in the density and morphology of oligodendrocytes in vivo in response to exposure to remyelination agents.

  • Prepare, test, and maintain standard laboratory equipment.

  • Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic lab methods, such as making chemical solutions, histological techniques and molecular techniques.

  • Experience with fluorescence microscopy.

  • Some related post-undergraduate work.

Starting Salary Range: Min $15.50 - Max $26.00 HRLY ($20,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience)

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing.
