Johns Hopkins University Research Technologist in Baltimore, Maryland

Under the general supervision of a faculty investigator or laboratory supervisor, we are seeking a Research Technologist who will be responsible for performing routine tasks in the laboratory, such as ordering and maintaining supplies, organization and cleanliness of the laboratory, maintenance of equipment, maintenance and organization of animal studies, treatment of animals, harvesting of tissues and fluid, culture of cell lines, and basic molecular analysis.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work requires basic use of scientific methods, procedures and techniques gained through previous training and experience.

  • Uses basic understanding of theory behind experiments and applies basic analytical skills to implement assigned projects, and to identify and trouble-shoot situations needing special attention. Strong mathematical and organizational skills are required as well as an ability to work independently and to read the literature covering the topic in question.

  • Follows established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments which may include basic tissue culture, cell separation methods, flow cytometry, electrophoretic separations, western blot analysis, PCR, basic molecular biology, or other specialized histology and biological science techniques. Will utilize in vivo models in experiments.

  • In vivo Animal work will include daily monitoring of animal health, Generation of patient derived xenografts and tumors via injection of cells, Administration of drugs, tumor measurement and tumor harvest, minor surgery for transplantation of cells and tissues, breeding of animals to maintain lines, genotyping, weaning, record keeping, graphing of data and monitoring experiments for appropriate end points.

  • Monitors inventory levels of lab supplies, order supplies weekly in accordance with established policies and procedures, ordering of animals, counts and validates orders upon receipt, organization and monitoring of frozen cell logs, follow up with vendors when problems occur.

  • Is responsible for helping to maintain the laboratory in a clean and organized manner.

  • Maintenance of a database for mouse tumors and the DNA and protein derived from these samples. Must be an independent worker, have very good organizational skills, be willing to interact frequently with the PI and have great team skills to work and teach others.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience.
