Johns Hopkins University Sr. Financial Analyst, Service Centers in Baltimore, Maryland

We are seeking a Sr. Financial Analyst, Service Centers who will oversee and guides the financial activities of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (SOM) service centers. The analyst will coordinate the rate and budget development activities for the SOM Central Research Finance vertical. Will meet regularly with departmental points of contact to ensure two-way communication for advocacy, knowledge transfer, and a shared understanding of financial activities of SOM service centers.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Coordinates

  • Oversees and guides the activities of SOM service centers.

  • Coordinates the rate development, budget, and analysis activities for the research finance vertical.

  • Meets regularly with departments to ensure two-way communication to create advocacy for the department, knowledge transfer, and a shared understanding of financial activities.

Applies

  • Incorporates an understanding of SOM service centers operations to align operations and implement best practices across service centers.

Creates/Prepares/Develops

  • Creates vertical-wide budgets and rates in conjunction with discussions with other Research Finance staff.

  • Assists in the preparation of budgets, scenario planning, long-range planning, financial modeling, variances, forecasting, projections, financial plans and reports, and other types of complex analysis, involving the review of significant amounts of data.

Analyzes/Interprets

  • Conducts budget to actuals and other relevant budget and rate analyses.

Manages

  • Manages service centers to ensure they are running smoothly and serving customers effectively.

  • Manages project budgets for the research finance vertical.

Problem Solving

  • Ensures people are charged correctly and implements the best course of action if there are discrepancies.

Thinking Critically

  • Monitors financial metrics performance, develops models and reports, and ensures two-way communications with departments to determine the financial performance of the SOM service centers and if a corrective action plan is warranted.

Trains/Communicates

  • Trains service centers on how to implement financial best practices and ensures customer satisfaction.

  • Communicates to units the role of service centers and how they can interact with them.

Collaborates

  • Partner with DBO analysts; SOM departmental finance and research staff; JHU Financial Research Compliance, JHU Cost Analysis and SOM Office for Faculty Research Resources.

Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Advanced knowledge in the use of the Microsoft Office suite of applications.

  • Strong customer service orientation and focus on details, accuracy and meeting pre-determined deadlines.

  • Proven communication, organizational, and analytic skills.

  • Ability to analyze data for budgeting, operations, auditing, accounts receivable, and reserve analysis.

  • Understanding of and commitment to the organization’s mission.

Physical Requirements

  • Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.

  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard.

  • Occasionally lifting, carrying objects weighing 10lbs. or less.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or a related field.

  • Five years of progressively responsible financial and business operations experience, preferably in a large and complex organization.

  • Advanced Excel skills, with demonstrated knowledge of Pivot tables, formulas and other functions required.

  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in research financial management and department business operations.

  • Experience with other data reporting tools.

  • SAP accounting knowledge.

Starting Salary Range: $62,300 - $109,000 Annually ($85,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
