Description of Work

This is an anticipated vacancy.

This is administrative and supervisory work in managing shore operations at a N.C. Department of Transportation Ferry Terminal. Employee directs all vessel and shore personnel as well as oversees shore support facilities including building and vessel maintenance, equipment, and supplies. Employee analyzes and recommends operating budgets and negotiates, recommends maintenance and repair contracts with government and private service providers. Employee plans and schedules crew complements for vessel operations and manages overtime work for seven-day week operations that vary seasonally according to traffic volumes. Employee also directs and oversees the enforcement of safety standards implemented by OSHA., US Coast Guard, Federal Communications Commission, and other State and Federal enforcement agencies. Employee ensures that vessels are staffed with U.S. Coast Guard certified crewmembers.

This position works out of the Pamlico River Ferry Operations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of ferry vessels.

  • Demonstrated ability to ensure NCDOT Ferry Division polices are communicated, applied, and enforced. (i.e. safety, accounting, operational, regulatory, and administrative)

  • Experience in planning, organizing, delegating, creating schedules, and budgets.

  • Experience scheduling and communicating with and dispatch ferry crews, work crews, equipment or equipment vehicles to appropriate locations according to specifications or safety needs.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of all applicable USCG rules and regulations that directly impact ferry operations.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate s degree from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of experience in office management or related administrative work; or High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma with six years of experience in office management or related administrative work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
