APPRENTICE 1ST YEAR

JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE:

Under close supervision, as an apprentice in training, must be willing and able to perform the less difficult tasks and assist others in high and low voltage line work involved in the construction and maintenance of electric transmission and distribution conductors, structures, underground systems, and related equipment, and be qualified to do the following and related work as assigned:

  1. Use pole climbing equipment and have ability to handle self on pole in safe and efficient manner.

  2. Handle poles, install poles, assist in the erection of wood and steel structures, including foundations.

  3. Make up and install guys and install secondaries.

  4. Connect services on energized conductors up to 600 volts.

  5. Install secondary racks and clevis, anchors, miscellaneous hardware, grounds, fittings for vertical type construction, buss supports, and conductors on dead circuits.

  6. Perform simple transmission and distribution switching (qualified lineman assistance).

  7. Tie knots and splice rope.

  8. Assist in trimming trees.

  9. Assist qualified lineman or mechanic in simple routine inspection and maintenance.

  10. Assist in the installation of all types of conduit systems.

  11. Assist in the handling, moving and installation of all transmission, distribution and plant equipment, machinery, etc.

  12. Prepare reports and records.

  13. Operate Company’s trucks and automobiles.

  14. Obtain/Maintain a valid Class A CDL

APPRENTICE 2ND YEAR

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Under close supervision, must know, understand and be willing and able to apply all applicable Company construction specifications in order to perform the less complicated tasks on high and low voltage line work involved in the construction and maintenance of electric transmission and distribution conductors, structures and equipment, assist in the installation and removal of electric meters, services and related equipment on customers' premises, connect and disconnect service at the pole, locate and repair all types of breaks in the electric transmission and distribution system, answer electric trouble calls to customers' premises, and be qualified to do the following and related work as assigned:

  1. Install crossarms, secondary racks and clevis, anchors and guys, and install hardware and fittings for vertical type construction, including conductors, single phase transformers, lightning arresters, grounds, cutouts, etc., on dead circuits.

  2. Trim trees.

  3. Under close supervision may be allowed to cover and work energized circuits when they and their supervisor are confident that this can be done safely.

  4. Assist in the installation, maintenance and repair of street lighting equipment and fixtures.

  5. Direct work of helpers and apprentices as required.

  6. Refuse transformers and circuit breakers and check grounds.

  7. Inspect meters and meter loops for irregularities.

  8. Prepare records and reports.

  9. Check customer's wiring for accidental ground.

  10. Check installation for proper secondary ground.

  11. Replace fuses on customer's premises.

  12. Execute non-payment disconnects.

  13. Operate Company's vehicles and equipment.

  14. Assist qualified serviceman, lineman, or others in working on energized conductors up to 5,000 over 600 volts.

  15. Handle and work from ladders.

  16. Assist in the installation, maintenance and repair of street lighting equipment and fixtures.

  17. Assist in the installation and removal of temporary wiring for equipment.

  18. Read meters, install and remove secondary meters and services.

  19. Make secondary load and voltage checks, setting of recording meters and change charts.

APPRENTICE 3RD YEAR

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Under close and/or directive supervision, and following prescribed routine and instructions as to methods and working details of average difficulty and importance, must know, understand and be willing and able to apply all applicable Company construction specifications in order to perform the less

complicated tasks on high and low voltage line work involved in the construction and maintenance of electric transmission and distribution conductors, structures and equipment, with some latitude for planning or laying out of working details, must be willing and able to perform tasks of average difficulty

involved in the installation and removal of electric meters, services and related equipment on customer's premises, connect and disconnect service at the pole, locate and repair all types of breaks in the electric transmission and distribution system, answer electric trouble calls to customer's premises and be qualified to do the following and related work as assigned:

  1. Use hot line tools under close supervision of qualified workman.

  2. Under close and/or directive supervision may be allowed to cover and work energized circuits when they and their supervisor are confident that this can be done safely.

  3. Fuse transformers and sectionalizing fuses.

  4. String, sag and tie in conductors on dead lines of all classes.

  5. Install all types of transformer installations, make tap changes and install primary metering equipment under supervision of qualified workman.

  6. Install, maintain, and repair street lighting equipment and fixtures.

  7. Assist in making aerial and submarine cable installations, including the making of joints and installing potheads.

  8. Assist in the installation of pole type regulators and transformers to boost or buck line voltage.

  9. Assist in phasing and checking rotation in circuits direct and with potential transformers.

  10. Assist in erecting and maintaining steel towers and outdoor substations.

  11. Assist in receiving blocks.

  12. Direct work of helpers, apprentices, and underclassmen as required.

  13. Work energized conductors on simple structures, up to and including 5,000 volts over 600 volts.

  14. Run services, install and remove all types of secondary meters and related equipment.

  15. Replace fuse links in outdoor type cutouts, and transformers.

  16. Install, maintain, and repair street lighting equipment and fixtures.

  17. Assist qualified workman in the installation and removal of transformers on energized circuits.

  18. Install and remove temporary wiring for equipment.

  19. Assist in load and voltage checks on distribution transformers.

  20. Assist in checking phase sequence and rotations.

  21. Install all types of transformer installations, primary metering equipment, and make tap changes under supervision of qualified workman.

  22. Read and check all types of meters and change graphic charts.

  23. Give service and meter locations.

  24. Plan and lay out work in a safe and efficient manner.

B. EXPERIENCE AND SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Must have worked for at least one year, and qualified, as an Apprentice 1st Year – Line Department or have had equivalent experience in related work, having all the qualifications of the previous classifications.

  2. Know Company’s safety rules, and be willing and able to administer all approved methods of resuscitation, and be willing and able to render practical first aid.

  3. Know the location of, and be willing and able to operate all of the firefighting equipment. Know what kind of equipment to use on electrical, oil and other fires.

  4. Hold a current Class A CDL license.

  5. Know Company’s electrical and mechanical tagging rules.

  6. Know city streets, and roads in rural sections.

  7. Have thorough knowledge of city and state traffic laws.

  8. Have a thorough knowledge of Company regulations and state laws governing disconnects for nonpayment, repossession of merchandise, and diversion of current.

  9. Have general knowledge of electric circuits and equipment.

  10. Be familiar with Company's rules and regulations applying to service and meter installations, Underwriters' National Electrical Code and any

  11. state or local regulations governing electrical wiring as pertains to service and meter installations.

  12. Be willing and able to read and understand simple wiring diagrams and blueprints job packet content.

  13. Know Company's electrical and mechanical tagging rules.

  14. Have general knowledge of layout and characteristics of the distribution system in the area assigned.

  15. Be willing and able to perform routine operations of moderate complexity and variety.

Essential Functions of the Linemen Position:

  • Must be able to traverse uneven terrain (including, but not limited to, wet, muddy and/or slippery terrain, concrete or asphalt) with a full complement of tools weighing up to fifty pounds

  • Must be able to work in extreme weather, including, extreme heat and cold

  • Must be able to work in confined spaces.

  • Must be able to work alone when performing restoration services.

  • Must be able to perform physical tasks, including digging, and pulling, pushing, carrying and lifting up to 80 pounds.

  • Maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License.

  • Must be able to safely operate trucks and heavy equipment and safely work around energized lines and equipment.

  • Must be able to work at heights for extended periods of time.

  • Must be able to work overhead from a bucket truck (perform work above shoulders on energized overhead lines).

  • Must be able to climb up and descend from wooden/steel structures, poles and ladders and be able to balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, grip, handle and feel.

  • Must have the ability to perform emergency rescue operations, including bringing unconscious or injured co-worker down from significant height or elevated area.

  • Must have sound judgment necessary to work safely in inherently dangerous environment.

  • Must be able to understand and follow safety rules.

  • Must be able to work up to 16 continuous hours per day.

  • Must have the ability to wear required personal protection equipment.

  • Must be able to perform basic computer tasks, such as entering time worked, noting beginning and completion of assigned task, checking and responding to emails, completing computer-based training, and other similar tasks.

  • Must be able to communicate effectively and interact with a team.

  • Must have the ability to manage stress and handle tense situations.

  • Must have regular and reliable attendance.

  • Must be able to work overtime when necessary.

Apprentice 3rd Year - 3+ years demonstrated linework experience required

Apprentice 2nd Year - 2+ years demonstrated linework experience required

Apprentice 1st Year: Completion of an accredited Lineworker Training program OR prior demonstrated linework experience required

As a condition of employment this position requires a pre-employment Fitness for Duty exam.
