Role Summary/Purpose:

The Traction and Auxiliary Sub-Systems Engineering Manager is responsible for development and fulfillment of locomotive core drivetrain and auxiliary power integration sub-system design. This leader will drive new technology development, processes, plans, procedures, workflows, tools, and best practices for the Traction and Auxiliary team. This role is integral to the engineering of new product/technology development programs, working closely with design teams on new product updates, and customer project fulfillment commitments.

The Electric Drivetrain Traction system manages the power flow from the primary source (propulsion batteries, diesel engine, 3rd rail/catenary/below deck charge) through the electrical system (filters, alternator, rectifier, inverters) and regulates the torque production from the motors to propel the locomotive and provide electric braking/battery charging. The Electric Drivetrain Auxiliary control system manages the power flow from the primary source to drive cooling systems, air compressor and control system battery charger. The Traction and Auxiliary control system also interfaces the vehicle to the off-vehicle wayside charging power and controls charging of the propulsion batteries.

Essential Responsibilities:

As the Traction and Auxiliary Sub-Systems Engineering Manager, you will provide strategic and fulfillment leadership to a team of Mechanical and Electrical Engineers, working cross-functionally with other engineering teams as well as other teams outside of engineering. Working within a matrix environment, you will be responsible for execution of overall drivetrain and power electronics, and control design, design requirements, functional specifications, electro-mechanical concepts, requirements and CCA model implementation. You will work with adjacent peer groups defining software release plans to ensure requirement fulfillment. You will leverage quality procedures, workflows, tools, and best practices to ensure quality products for both internal and external customers, that meet key product and project requirements in compliance with engineering standards & practices.

  • Responsible for Traction and Auxiliary Sub-system Engineering Fulfillment strategy for engineering projects including new product development and locomotive requisition applications across all supported locomotive platforms.

  • Lead and provide direction to a team of Engineers working cross-functionally with systems engineering, product management, commercial teams, simulation, software, verification and validation, and hardware teams in pursuit of innovative and efficient configuration management processes and plans.

  • Drive Traction and Auxiliary Sub-system Work Planning, on-time delivery, and first pass yield goals.

  • Responsible for Configuration Management and documentation of chartered engineering requirements.

  • Manage Traction and Auxiliary Sub-system design architecture standards and guidelines.

  • Integrate design strategies with peer groups/other sub-system design teams.

  • Lead efforts for new project proposals process pertaining to Traction and Auxiliary Sub-systems

  • Drive process improvements to improve quality, time to market, and cost for development effort.

  • Build sustainable methods, tools, processes, metrics, and culture necessary to successfully meet sub-system team deliverables.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Masters in Electrical/Computer/Mechanical Engineering with five (5) plus years’ experience OR Bachelor's in Electrical/Computer/Mechanical Engineering with eight (8) plus years’ of relevant experience in product development, NPI, and project management in industrial sector.

  • Demonstrated ability to meet or exceed goals and objectives in a matrix organization.

  • Proven strong interpersonal, communication, influencing, analytical, and leadership skills.

  • Proven organization and management skills.

  • Pro-active, organized, motivated, and results-oriented team player, with strong sense of ownership, accountability, and sense of urgency.

  • Demonstrated initiative and resourcefulness to solve problems and deliver results.

  • Ability and willingness to travel as required (including international).

Desired Characteristics:

  • 3+ years in a leadership position as a technical, program, product or engineering manager.

  • 3+ years in a design engineer role of increasing responsibilities and complexity of development

  • Experience as a technical leader demonstrated expertise in technical domain

  • Expertise in Engineering development, Engineering roles.

  • Knowledge of sub-system design principles & Matlab/Simulink tool suites and working with embedded software control systems.

  • Demonstrated technical expertise in leading the integration of control system with component hardware (propulsion batteries, DC/AC inverters, AC/AC convertors, motors, alternators, rectifiers) and other sub-systems (propulsion battery, diesel engine, engine cooling, engine control, compressed air, ventilation) to meet performance, application, and platform functional requirements.
