JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Penn State (https://psu.edu) ’s Fruit Research and Extension Center located in Biglerville, PA is seeking a Farm Specialist. The Farm Specialist will manage agricultural research orchards, equipment, vehicles, greenhouses, refrigerated storages and laboratory facilities necessary to achieve the missions of the Center. The individual will be responsible for:

  • Overseeing five field service technicians and all planning, organizing and supervision of work they perform to maintain research orchards and facilities.

  • Daily collaboration and long-term planning with Center’s faculty members, graduate students, and visiting scientists is required to ensure laboratories and orchards are maintained as needed for research.

  • Oversee all physical plant maintenance and interface with PSU Office of Physical Plant for related needs of the Center.

  • Coordinate with outside service providers to complete tasks falling outside of the duties assigned to field service technicians, including vehicle and equipment repairs and HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and building repairs and maintenance.

  • Assist with the safety, plant protection, bio safety, and regulatory compliance of the Center.

Education and Experience:

Minimum requirements include a Bachelor’s degree plus six years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Advanced knowledge of fruit production practices is essential. Excellent organizational, verbal communication and documentation skills are essential. The ability to work within a team environment and with diverse audiences is vital. Managerial/supervisory experience is desired.

Other Requirements: This position requires that candidate acquire a Category 18 certified commercial pesticide applicator license within 90 days of hire.

Duties will require the operation of motor vehicles. Since this position requires you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties, a valid driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$56,200.00 - $81,500.00
