Application must be submitted by 4:45 P.M. on last date to file. <P> DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This position is responsible for the performance of a variety of skilled painting tasks. The incumbent may be assigned to perform tasks involving the preparation, care and painting of wood, asphalt, concrete, plaster and metal surfaces. The work is performed under the general supervision of a higher level technical supervisor. Supervision may be exercised over semi-skilled or unskilled workers assigned for specific projects. Does related work as required. <P> TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: Paints traffic lines, parking lines and crosswalk lines; prepares work area by erecting scaffolds, positioning ladders, arranging protective cloths and tarps; Prepares surfaces by scraping, sanding, washing, applying paint and varnish remover; Operates power painting and traffic striping equipment; repairs surfaces by puttying nail holes and cracks; mixes paints and stains; glazes windows; paints interior and exterior of buildings and structures, including wood, metal, concrete block surfaces; oversees the work of subordinate personnel assigned for specific tasks; cleans brushes, spray equipment, otherwise returns work area to original condition. <P> FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the principles, practices, materials and tools involved in the painting trade; working knowledge of the safety procedures applicable to the painting trade; working knowledge of the principles, practices, materials and tools involved in the painting of cars, bridges and metal surfaces; skill in the use of tools of the trade, including brushes, scrapers, putty knives, sanders; ability to erect and work from scaffolds and ladders; ability to plan and lay out work; ability to follow oral and written instructions; thoroughness; manual dexterity; Ability to operate a personal computer and utilize common office software programs including word processing, spreadsheet, and database at an acceptable rate of accuracy and speed; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. <P> MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either: <LI> One year of experience as a Painter at the journey level; or <LI> Two years of experience in assisting a journey level Painter as a Painter's Helper <P> The City of Binghamton is an equal opportunity employer with a commitment to workforce diversification. <P> All new hires are required to pass a pre-employment drug test as a condition of employment.
