This position is located within Engineering Service under the Maintenance and Operations Section within the HVAC Shop. The AC Equipment Mechanic Helper maintains and repair all types and brands of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment throughout the Birmingham VA Healthcare Care System.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the questions. The screen-out element for this position is Ability to do the job of an Air Condition Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Those who meet the minimum level of experience and training for the screen-out element will then be evaluated in each of the following job elements: · Ability to perform the duties of this position without more than normal supervision (SCREEN OUT). · Knowledge of equipment assembly installation, repair, etc. · Technical practices. (theoretical, precise, artistic) · Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. · Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The position requires performance of work which involves handling and carrying equipment and tools weighing up to 50 pounds. Uses hydraulic lift and dolly and is assisted by shop personnel when lifting or transporting heavier objects. Normally works from floor and ladders, but occasionally works from platforms and scaffolding in order to reach heating and cooling units. Work requires stooping, stretching, bending kneeling, and crawling in cramped places. WORKING CONDITIONS: Much of this work is performed outside with exposure to temperature extremes common to this area. Some work performed indoors and in mechanical rooms. Occasionally subject to cuts, burns, electrical shocks and respiratory ailments. Exposed to repeated prolonged or concentrated amounts of refrigerant gases which may cause toxic effects to eyes, skin and internal organs. Employee may be required to wear safety equipment such as, but not limited to, hearing protection, safety glasses, hard hat, respirators, gloves and safety shoes.
