This research assistant position offers an incredible opportunity to build research and project management skills that will benefit any future career path. The research assistant will work closely with two pediatric otolaryngologists. The research focuses on pediatric otolaryngology, especially on tracheostomy and airway research. This position offers tremendous education on the research process, database creation and management, statistics, and quality improvement.

This Clinical Research Assistant I will be responsible for:

  • Manages multidisciplinary tracheostomy team meetings and monitors the team’s outcome metrics and related projects.

  • Learns to navigate the electronic medical record systems used at Boston Children’s Hospital, and gain medical knowledge if desired.

  • Enters Boston Children’s Hospital’s data on tracheostomy patients into the Global Tracheostomy Collaborative (GTC)’s REDCap database.

  • Collaborates with the international committee that works on the database, including otolaryngologists, statisticians, and family representatives.

  • Creates documentation necessary for the Institutional Review Board (IRB) with the Principal Investigator (PI) of the study. Learns to manage and review the IRB process for the department together with other research assistants.

  • Prepares new applications for research funding and study grants with the PI.

  • Manages multiple research projects with respective research groups to meet study goals and protocol requirements. Collaborates with other members of this department and others on joint projects.

  • Collects data and monitors data collection for quality.

  • Collaborates with biostatisticians to create and prepare data collection, statistical reports, and analytical summaries for distribution to the research team for review and analysis.

  • If interested, can attend and present at national/international conferences. Can also attend Quality Improvement conferences, PHIS database training conferences, and others pertaining to this job and future career goals.

  • Increases abstract and manuscript writing skills for submission to medical journals and national conferences.

  • Improves presentation skills with presentations (posters or oral) at meetings and conferences.

  • If interested, can shadow PIs and other physicians in the clinic and operating room (COVID permitting).

  • If interested, can attend medical lectures and presentations.

  • Performs other miscellaneous administrative duties as assigned or required.

In order to qualify you must have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in an appropriately related discipline, preferably in a Life, Health, or Social Sciences field. Students with an interest in otolaryngology are very desirable.

  • Analytical and statistical skills to gather and interpret data.

  • Well-developed communication skills in order to manage projects that collaborate internationally with people across different professions.

  • Well-developed organizational skills in order to manage multiple projects at various stages of completion.

  • Advanced writing skills for preparing IRB submissions, abstracts, and drafting manuscripts.

  • Must be able to work autonomously with minimal supervision.

  • Most research assistants stay for at least two years due to the steep learning curve. Three years is Preferred.
