Job Summary and Qualifications

PRN rotating day and evening shift. May include some weekends. 8 hour shifts

The Certified Pharmacy Technician is responsible for all stocking, filling/refilling, computer input of charges. The Certified Pharmacy Technician is also responsible for pre-packing and storage of non-IV medication and filling unit dose carts. The Pharmacy Tech delivers medications, including controlled substances and emergency drug supplies, to nursing units, dispensing machines, and emergency carts.

The Pharmacy Technician fulfills departmental responsibilities with the long range plan, mission, vision and values of the hospital.

Position tasks and responsibilities include:

  • Counts, packages, and labels unit dose for inspection by pharmacist.

  • Assists pharmacists as directed, including filling orders and preparing labels.

  • Prepares I.V. mixtures and operates automated systems.

  • Maintains pharmacy inventory and performs clerical duties.

  • Maintains strong knowledge of hospital policies and government regulations and performs dispensing duties accordingly.

  • Assists with quality improvement initiatives, inventory and ordering of pharmaceuticals.

  • Orients and mentors staff.

  • Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required.

  • Completes unit/floor inspections as assigned.

  • Participates in maintaining department inventory levels

  • Orders medication based on PAR levels

  • Orders medication based on clinical needs in conjunction with formulary initiatives

  • Works with DOP or designee as needed in inventory management initiatives

  • Participates in maintaining department formulary initiatives

  • Provides a safe environment for patient, visitor and employees through identifying, correcting, and reporting health and safety hazards.

POSITION QUALIFICATION:

Required Job Qualifications include:

  • National certification as a Pharmacy Tech (CPhT). Certification may be obtained through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcareer Association.

  • Must be registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the Kentucky Board of Pharmacy within 30 days from hire.

  • Previous pharmacy tech experience in a hospital setting preferred.

  • Customer service abilities including effective listening skills.

  • Basic computer skills.

  • Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast paced environment.

  • Ability to perform work that requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, squatting, kneeling, moving, lifting of patients and/or equipment up to 10 lbs.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS:

Demonstrates the ability to perform specific competencies as listed on the Competency Assessment Forms. Meets mutually-agreed upon performance goals/objectives established as listed on the Performance Management Plan.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Occasional exposed to the risk of blood borne diseases. Limited contact with patients but in a wide variety of circumstances (accident, injuries and illness). Has available protective gear necessary for performance of task without risk of exposure. Occasional subject to irregular work hours, and pressure due to multiple phone calls and inquiries from doctors and nurses.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

Prolonged, extensive or considerable standing/walking required. Occasional lifts/carries/pushes of boxes over 10 pounds, and supplies needed for various pieces of equipment. Manual dexterity and mobility needed for frequent reaching, stooping and bending which may be needed in the collection of blood samples.
