*Position Summary: *The Children’s Aid Society (CAS), established in 1853, is one of New York City’s leading child and family service organizations. Our Adolescence Division supports the mission of CAS by fostering the holistic development and growth of youth in Harlem, Washington Heights, Staten Island and the Bronx. We accomplish this through the implementation of evidence informed programs that seek to ensure that youth reach their full potential in the following domains: education, health, family and home, social emotional; and transition successfully into adulthood. We also support the mission by building the capacity of staff who work with teens in the communities we serve as well as in the broader field of youth development.

Under the supervision of our Community School Director at Bronx Career and College Prep HS,Success Mentorswill work with chronically absent youth to address the barriers keeping them from going to school every day- and to help them reach their educational outcomes. They will help to identify the causes of poor attendance, which may include family struggles or poor health, and work with CAS staff and DOE to seek solutions. Success mentors will assist in academic tutoring, and may also be asked to work directly with groups of youth, lead activities, and organize events.

*Responsibilities: *

  • Check-in daily with a caseload of youth assigned to you for the year and meet with them regularly, both one-one and in small groups, to check in on how school is going and listen to youth’s needs, provide tutoring, address academic needs.

  • Meet and greet matched youth each morning/afternoon when they arrive at school or program site; make early morning phone calls to absent students.

  • Track attendance and celebrate improvements.

  • Work with school and site leadership to identify appropriate interventions to support and engage the mentee.

  • Seek advice and identify targeted sources of youth or family supports from appropriate school staff and community-based partners under the direction of the Site Director.

  • Keep notes about youth attendance patterns, needs and interventions-make sure monitoring of data strategic.

  • Attend (or be represented at) weekly/bi-weekly student success meetings to share any best practices or challenges and to present a summary of how youth are doing.

  • When working with groups of youth develop and maintain an effective system of classroom management that encourages children to develop pro-social behavior and self-discipline.

  • Communicate regularly with Program/Site Director or other designated CAS personnel regarding needs and supplies to support chronically absent youth.
