This is an interactive, “hands on” position. Accountable for accurately and consistently dimensionally measuring and reporting on items, products, gages, and tooling as required by ITW Tomco and customer requirements.
The following accountabilities are to be performed in accordance with the spirit and philosophy contained in the document, ITW Tomco Mission Statement, and in accordance with company policies:
Perform or assist in the performance of product capability studies, MSA studies, and product, gage and method correlation studies and evaluations.
Assist the associates of ITW Tomco in dimensional analysis, interpretation of blueprint requirements, conditions, and results of items, products, gages, and tooling.
Assist in the development, maintenance and ongoing upkeep of the metrology files and records.
Responsible for adherence to the company environmental policy, procedures, and with the environmental management system.
Perform or assist in the performance of in-house laboratory testing and analysis.
Responsible for adherence to company quality policy, procedures, and with the quality management system.
Ensure lab environment and all layout practices adhere to quality policy, ISO14004 or applicable customer standards.
Maintain compliance with ISO 9001, IATF 16949, ISO 14001, and OH&S standards.
Perform other duties as requested by the Quality Manager or Layout Supervisor.
In addition to accountabilities above, select personnel may be required to perform additional responsibilities as noted below:
A. Maintain gage calibration per prescribed intervals on gages for Bryan and Hebron facilities (both company and employee owned gages).
B. Maintain current levels of ISO 17025 certificates from outside gage vendors and calibration services. Only ISO 17025 approved vendors are permitted. Request current certificates on an annual basis.
C. Review incoming gage certificates to ensure adequacy of calibration and verification of gage results falling within specified tolerances.
D. Work with gage vendors on gage concepts and design. Follow up with gage vendors per time lines on released gage purchases.
E. Assist in resolution to gage discrimination to meet MSA requirements.
F. Ensure all MSA studies are completed for each gage.
G. Maintain gage calibration and electronic gage tracking system per ITW Powertrain procedures as dictated.
H. Complete gage drawings as required on CAD system. Ensure all gage drawings are document controlled on annual basis.
I. Knowledge of small gage repair, and understanding of what repairs can be made, if necessary.
The Layout Technician should possess strong general math skills with geometric and trigonometric understanding, blue print reading and geometric dimensioning and tolerances. The incumbent should possess strong bench work and layout methods, mechanical thinking, problem solving, ISO 9001, IATF 16949, ISO 14001, and OH&S knowledge. Considerable skill is required in interpersonal relations and the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Experience with Coordinate Measurement Machine programming and inspection is preferred.
The Layout Technicians with additional accountabilities is expected to have knowledge of gage concepts through understanding correct purpose and use of gauging to be applied. This person will also be expected to program CMM for gage calibrations and have the ability to use CAD for gage drawings. The Layout Technician must have an understanding of ASME specifications (gauging specification requirements), NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology), ANSI and Measurement Systems Analysis, and ISO 17025 standards, along with an understanding of tolerances and what is applies for the class of gages.
This position assists the associates of ITW Tomco and their respected departments in the dimensional development, maintenance and ongoing improvement of products and tooling. This incumbent will also assist the associates of ITW Tomco and their respected departments in the dimensional analysis interpretations of items, products, and tooling. This person will assist the associates of ITW Tomco and their respected departments as it relates to gage calibration. This includes all steps from the design, approval and implementation of a gage, up to and including the proper maintenance, tracking and calibration of the gage at regular intervals.
The primary contact for this position will be management, supervisors, quality personnel, hourly employees, and engineering positions to serve in an advisory capacity with these individuals. Therefore, it is essential that the layout technician possess good communication skills as well as maintaining confidentiality, flexibility and professionalism.

The Layout Technician may at times be exposed to manufacturing floor conditions. The Layout Technician must observe safety and security precautions and become familiar with procedures to take in case of problems.
