Summary The incumbent is a Pipefitter Leader in the Mechanical Maintenance Unit in the Engineering Service located at Veterans Western New York Healthcare System (VA WNYHS). The position is responsible for leading and providing guidance in a variety of advanced-level work related to facility maintenance, which includes installation, testing, and preventive maintenance to the Medical Center's utility systems and service calls as it relates to the Mechanical Maintenance unit. Responsibilities Major duties and responsibilities include: The incumbent will be responsible to the Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor for assuring that the work assignments or other workings of the group are carried out by passing on to other workers the instructions received from his supervisor, getting the work started, and meeting deadlines as required. Incumbent plans the distribution of work to subordinates daily, ensuring the work is evenly distributed. Determines the equipment, tools, materials, and maintenance required. Assures that materials, parts, and equipment are ordered and delivered so that work can be accomplished in an orderly and timely manner. The incumbent will work with other unit employees and set the pace, performing the same work done by the subordinates and demonstrating proper work techniques and methods. The incumbent will report to the supervisor the status and progress of work and the causes of any work delays. The incumbent plans to provide in-service training for all unit employees and, where necessary, coordinates these plans with the Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor for integration into the station training program. Assures that safety and housekeeping rules are followed. Obtaining needed infection control and safety permits when required. Maintain current knowledge and answer questions from other workers on procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives. Check work while in progress and when finished to see whether the supervisor's instructions, work sequence, blueprints, plans, and deadlines have been met. Incumbent prepares written reports when directed and maintains schedules, files, and records to ensure an ongoing preventive maintenance program. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The individual frequently works in awkward positions, cramped areas or hard to reach places. Work involves frequent bending, reaching, crouching, standing, and arm movement. Work is performed inside and outside in variable temperatures and is usually dirty, dusty, noisy, or have unpleasant odors. Occasionally exposed to extreme temperatures and noise when working in switchyard, power-generating facilities, or on roofs. Subject to possible injuries such as strains, sprains, broken bones, cuts, and bruises. The incumbent may be exposed to danger from explosions of equipment and cables in manholes, switch yard, and mechanical rooms, as well as danger from high voltage electrical shock. The incumbent regularly performs work in laboratory and/or patient care areas where they may be exposed to contaminated equipment. They also may be exposed to chemicals in these areas along with chemicals such as transformer oil and fuel oil. The incumbent is required to perform work in mechanical rooms with possible exposure to refrigerant gases and exhaust fumes. The incumbent must follow numerous safety procedures which requires them wear proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate for the task assigned. Sometimes the protective equipment is difficult to work in because it restricts movement, vision, and hearing.
