The Department of Plant and Soil Science ( PSS ), at the University of Vermont ( UVM ) invites applications for a full-time Lecturer specializing in Agriculture/Environment Assessment & Management. This is a 9-month, full-time appointment. This individual will be joining a successful, multi-disciplinary, applied science department. Current faculty are engaged in soil science, agroecology, agronomy, horticulture, landscape design, and entomology. PSS faculty have access to research farms and natural areas for teaching and research purposes. Anticipated start date is August 19, 2024.

Qualified applicants are required to hold a master’s degree or higher in environmental science, soil science, horticulture, agroecology, or a closely related field. Highly motivated individuals with a robust interest in undergraduate environmental and agricultural science education, and industry or academic experience, are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the Environmental Science Program ( ENSC ) and the PSS department’s agricultural curriculum. They should demonstrate a strong track record in teaching environmental science. They will be teaching the field laboratory portion of ENSC 3600: Pollutant Movement in Air, Land, and Water to 100-140 students each fall semester. This course requires thorough knowledge of field sample collection, processing, and basic lab/chemistry procedures and engages students in project-based learning. In spring semester, they will teach 2-3 courses from among a list of existing PSS offerings and/or developed from within their field of knowledge in consultation with the department chair and appropriate curriculum committees. Courses taught could include agricultural ecology; farm planning; farm operations; crop science; soil morphology; compost ecology; or other related topics, depending on the experience of the candidate. Successful candidates are expected to serve on department and university committees as part of their workload. They will also be expected to advise and mentor undergraduate students. Upon promotion to Senior Lecturer, candidates can join the graduate faculty and advise graduate students.
