Brand Messenger Specialist

Reports: Director of Brand Communications

Cedar Rapids Community School District seeks a Brand Messenger Specialist to join our team. The Brand Messenger Specialist conveys compelling narratives and brand stories that inspire and engage our audience. In this position, you will create written content aligning with the district's mission and values.

The successful candidate will have a passion for storytelling and the ability to create narratives that resonate with our audiences. You will collaborate with other communications and marketing team members to create content showcasing the district's unique value proposition. You should have experience writing for various audiences and purposes (narrative, informational, persuasion, descriptive, and technical).

Key Brand Messenger Specialist responsibilities include:

  • Develop a world-class internal and external relations strategy, seeking high-level placements in print, broadcast, and online media to increase CRCSD’s visibility.

  • Build connections with media and critical journalists through various channels, from traditional to digital and social.

  • Ensure our internal and public relations efforts serve to achieve immediate and long-term goals

  • Forecast news cycles and identify areas of trending public interest.

  • Understand the competitive landscape, staying ahead of threats to our brand image.

  • Establish a media relations plan with actionable strategies for high-level placements.

Additional Responsibilities include:

  • Evaluate and establish the internal and public relations plan and strategy.

  • Engage with the marketing department to ensure that CRCSD’s campaigns are aligned with all district strategic goals and relevant plans for growth and new opportunities.

  • Leverage existing media relationships, including broadcast, traditional, and online, to land prominent placements.

  • Pitch new ideas and amplify content and social concepts to propel brand awareness while representing the brand voice and staying consistent with current trends and media opportunities.

  • Write timely press releases and media kits and collaborate with the data and creative marketing teams for proactive and regular communication.

Our ideal Brand Messenger Specialist checks these boxes:

  • Bachelor's degree in public relations, marketing, or advertising

  • Exceptional writing and editing skills

  • Knowledge of traditional and digital media and social media

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills

Qualifications and Required Skills:

  • Proven work experience as a content creator

  • Creative minded with an ability to conceive interesting ideas for new content

  • Demonstrate portfolio of written material

  • Demonstrate documented immersion in social media and in-depth knowledge of social media best practices

  • Working knowledge of SEO best practices and digital analytics

  • Basic knowledge of content management systems and customer relationship management

  • Excellent researching and interviewing skills

  • Ability to follow deadlines and fact-check information

  • Enthusiastic approach to working collaboratively with team members

  • Degree in communications, journalism, English or a similar field

  • Desired, but not required: basic graphic design skills

Proposed salary range: $55,000 - $60,000

The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables and carts. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus while conducting classes or working with computers, written materials, reports, assessment data, etc.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet. The position requires the commitment of professional working hours that may require the employee to extend beyond a typical 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. workday. The employee will frequently work in different areas of the district including in/at desks, on or near the floor, standing, in movement while instructing or assisting others, etc. The employee will usually work in indoor temperatures.
