Team or Function Overview

GAF's Manufacturing facility in Chester is located in an area known not only for its scenic beauty but for its dedication to community. Located between Charlotte, NC and Columbia, SC Chester is in a prime location for anyone with any interests varying from hiking, hunting and fishing, to enjoying the cuisine, culture, and activities expected from larger city environments. The Chester Glass Mat facility boasts a highly tenured workforce of just under 100 employees with a safety record of nearly 24 years without a lost-time injury. Summary

We are looking for a Process Engineer who will help lead the execution of Quality and Process Improvement projects and activities using standard PI tools such as Braincube, Qualpro, MVT/DOE, Kepner Tregoe PSDM. Use Hierarchy of values (Safety, Quality, Service, Cost) in prioritizing, using Plans, and executing capital improvements resulting from these projects.

Essential Duties

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Daily safety inspections of working areas

  • Daily interaction with hourly teammates to discuss safety issues

  • EnforcestrictadherencetoallGAFsafetypoliciesandprocedures

  • Stay informed of industry best safety practices and incorporate them into the Chester operations

  • Act as safety liaison to the plant by performing safety related tracking activities, reporting, root cause analysis, and improvements through safety investigations

  • SupportProductiondepartmentinachievingthesetgoalsofproductionrate, machine uptime, and raw material yield

  • Use statistical tools (SPC charts, DOE, Pi trends, Braincube) to minimize variation in the production process

  • Use engineering principles to identify and remove bottlenecks in the manufacturing process

  • Work with hourly teammates to refine procedures and methods to increase production efficiency

  • Using knowledge of engineering principles, work with suppliers and vendors to bring new technologies to the Chester plant

  • Coordinate with the Plant Engineer on capital projects that increase the efficiency of the production line

  • Work with the quality department to identify and correct quality issues stemming from the operation of the manufacturing line

  • Train hourly teammates on production line set-ups to maximize efficiency and finished product performance

  • Coordinate trial planning, implementation, and follow-up with both internal and external customers

  • Submit required reports to state and federal agencies as dictated by the Chester operating permits

  • Act as main contact for Chester’s environmental consultant

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Under This Roof, We Require

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Paper Science

  • At least 1 year of experience in manufacturing; paper industry or roofing preferred; a co-op could be sufficient experience.
