Work Schedule: 8 Hr (9:00:00 AM - 5:30:00 PM)

Summary:

This position independently conduct a variety of highly technical and complex laboratory procedures and experiments in accordance with study protocols. Assures good laboratory practices are followed and may lead see others in the lab as directed by supervisor. Exemplifies the RUSH mission, vision and values and acts in accordance with the RUSH policies and procedures.

Required Job Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Bioengineering or other biological sciences

• Five years of laboratory experience.

• Knowledge of research safety issues and regulations.

• Knowledge of biomaterial testing

• Able to follow oral and written instructions.

• Able to determine priorities and work independently.

• Able to respond appropriately in unanticipated situations.

• Able to work well with people in a variety of situations.

• Able to demonstrate understanding of need for accuracy all areas of performance including observation and analyzing of test results.

• Knowledge of both basic and specialized laboratory instruments and software programs.

• Expert knowledge of best practice laboratory practices, principles and protocol design including their application.

• Proficient with Microsoft Office skills including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Preferred Job Qualifications:

• Experience in Histology and Microscopy

• Experience with procedures (including surgery) in experimental small-animal (rodents)

• Computer science training experience and Imaging software experience

• Prior supervisory experience

Responsibilities:

• Independently or with minimal supervision plan and conduct highly specialized research procedures by applying knowledge of advanced techniques and equipment. Uses independent judgement in applying or adapting scientific techniques. Document results, develop and revise procedures/protocols to address changes and innovation in biology research

• Perform experiments, including training, observation, anesthesia, dosing, sample collection, surgery assistance, imaging, etc, according to established protocols.

• Perform microscopy (brightfield, fluorescence and confocal) and histology studies according to established protocols

• Log data and experiment results in laboratory notebooks and discuss with senior researchers and team

• Perform experiments, analyze and interpret data.

• Serve as technical resource for other research personnel. Set up, maintain and operate traditional and advanced laboratory instruments to conduct experiments

• Recommend protocol development and experiment modifications.

• Operate and maintain routine and sophisticated laboratory equipment. Use automated equipment, computerized instruments, imaging instruments including instruments capable of performing a number of tests at the same time

• Train staff on specialized procedures and concepts for routine and complex tests. Monitors changes in industry practices and recommends implementation where appropriate. Ensure that compliant, competent and safe laboratory practices are followed

• Follow good laboratory safety practices and comply with safety protocols. Ensure lab personnel follow safety practices and keep protocols up-to-date.

• Perform data collection and exhibits for publication. May assist in writing publication or manuscripts. Conduct literature review and prepare summary for Principal Investigators (PI)

• May present at scientific meetings as agreed by supervisor and PI

• Assist for laboratory orders of animals, supplies, consumables and equipment after meticulous comparative quality/cost analyses from multiple vendors

• Assists with writing and submitting IBC protocols. Managing of Lab Safety protocols. Maintain records of MTAs

• Assist with writing and submitting all documents for renewals, amendments, utilization reports, inspections.

• Keep inventory of laboratory reagents, equipment, supplies. Keep records of laboratory protocols and procedures

• Use specialized computer software to collect, analyze and model experimental data.
