Work Schedule: 8 Hr (10:00:00 AM - 4:00:00 PM)

General Summary:

The Research Intern under supervision, conducts a variety of established functions that support research at the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center, particularly focused on our research on lifestyle factors and aging. The intern is responsible for observing, learning skills on structuring, and organizing the data. Exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Assists with maintaining the RADC nutrition database using publicly available USDA database.

  2. Edit and code the food frequency questionnaire forms collected for RADC cohorts (check forms for completeness and accuracy, possibly review and code qualitative data/open-ended questions using established codes).

  3. Under supervision, observe human brain harvesting, dissection, and preservation in RADC neuropathology lab.

  4. Observe biological samples, such as blood and DNA for Laboratory analysis.

  5. Observe and assist with basic microscopy, digital slide scanning and organization.

  6. Helps with conference and other research presentations, including presentation support (preparation of slides/other presentation materials, content development, graphics, and other presentation needs as appropriate).

  7. Assists with finding references and generating reference lists/materials.

  8. Document work, including methods, and results according to Nutrition Epi lab protocols. Share observations and results with supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. This position is appropriate for a high school student.

  2. Must have interest in research activities, good writing/editing and communication skills, good organizational skills, ability to prioritize, good judgment and decision making, and ability to work with diverse investigators.

  3. Must have ability to multitask and good time management skills.

  4. Must demonstrate computer proficiency.
