The University of Miami/UHealth Department of Physical Therapy is currently seeking a full time Physical Therapist I Fellow to work in Coral Gables, FL. The Physical Therapist I provides physical therapy and wellness services to patients and clients who have impairments, functional disabilities, or changes in physical function and health status resulting from injury, disease or other causes. Moreover, this employee helps patients and clients restore function, improve mobility, relieve pain, and prevent or limit permanent physical disabilities. The Physical Therapist I collaborates with healthcare teams that include physicians, occupational therapists, and psychologists.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Evaluates new patients, establishes goals, and develops appropriate treatment plans.

  • Documents all evaluations, treatments, and other pertinent patient interactions daily.

  • Educates patients and families regarding medical conditions and provides instructions for home activities.

  • Communicates with physicians and their staff to obtain necessary information and suggests revisions in treatment.

  • Utilizes treatment tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner.

  • Maintains a satisfactory level of productivity and demonstrates willingness to adjust personal schedule in case of crisis or real clinic need.

  • Participates in quality and safety improvement activities.

  • Orients, instructs, and directs work activities for assistants and support personnel.

  • Utilizes appropriate methods and materials for learning programs, monitors effectiveness, and adapts programs accordingly.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Department Specific Qualifications

Education:

Doctoral Degree in Physical Therapy

Certification and Licensing:

  • Licensure as a Physical Therapist in the state of Florida

  • Current Florida State physical therapy license in good standing or demonstrate an ability to obtain Florida Licensure

  • Possess ABPTS Sports or Orthopedic board certification or completion of prior ABPTRE accredited sports/orthopedic physical residency program.

  • Possess one of the following: a current ATC designation, current license as an EMT, or certification as an emergency responder.

Experience:

Minimum of 1 year of relevant experience

Department Specific Functions

  • Athletics Responsibilities: Athlete Care & Injury Assessment and Management

  • Evaluate and manage acute and chronic upper extremity injuries in athletes.

  • Develop immediate care and management strategies for common baseball-related injuries such as rotator cuff tears, labral injuries, and ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries.

  • On-Site Athletic Event Coverage

  • Provide physical therapy coverage for athletic events, including games and practices.

  • Manage acute injuries on-site and provide immediate care to athletes.

  • Performance Optimization

  • Collaborate with athletic trainers and strength coaches to develop conditioning and injury prevention programs tailored to baseball and overhead athletes.

  • Conduct performance assessments, including range of motion, strength, tech, and functional movement analysis.

  • Education and Training: Educational Workshops and Seminars

  • Organize and conduct educational sessions for baseball players, coaches, and trainers on injury prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation specific to overhead athletes.

  • Stay updated on the latest research and advancements in sports medicine and share knowledge with the athletic team.

  • Administrative and Logistical Support: Coordination with University Athletics Department

  • Liaise with the university's athletics department to ensure cohesive care for student-athletes.

  • Participate in meetings with athletic department staff to discuss athlete health and program needs.

  • Research and Development: Clinical Research

  • Participate in or lead clinical research projects related to upper extremity injuries and sports rehabilitation.

  • Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at professional conferences, focusing on the unique needs of this athlete group.

  • Mentorship and Supervision

  • Mentor and supervise physical therapy students, residents, and athletic training students, focusing on the care of baseball and overhead athletes

  • Provide guidance and support in clinical and research activities.

  • Professional Development: Continuing Education

  • Participate in continuing education activities focused on the care and rehabilitation of baseball and overhead athletes.

  • Attend conferences and workshops relevant to upper extremity physical therapy and sports medicine for this specific athlete population.

  • Attends and participates in Grand Rounds to represent the Department of Physical Therapy and acquire information from our larger medical community to disseminate relevant information for staff development and service delivery.
