Town Of Denton Facilities Maintenance Worker I in Denton, Maryland

This is facilities maintenance work requiring the incumbent to operate medium weight motor vehicles. An employee in this class with general supervision from the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor operates a truck with gross weight in excess of 25,000 pounds, a power broom, and maintenance equipment and performs related manual work. Performance is evaluated periodically based on observation of tasks performed, maintenance of equipment operated and attitude towards work. Positions in this class are determined to be essential requiring employees to work in emergency situations such as storms, floods and hurricanes. EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Examples are illustrative only) Operates four wheel drive truck, power broom, power mower, assists with wood chipper, leaf vacuum, and snow plow. Hauls trash, salts and sands roads, performs maintenance on equipment; cuts and trims bushes and trees to prevent visual obstruction; cleans ditches and culverts with shovel; may be required to read water meters. Performs street sanitation and facilities maintenance; cleans buildings and does landscaping. Performs other duties as assigned. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Working knowledge of the operation of trucks and the care of such trucks and diesel engines; Maryland State traffic regulations, of safety and accident prevention; the safe operating limits of operating equipment. Must be willing and able to maintain the appearance of vehicles and equipment to be used; perform minor maintenance functions such as changing oil, lubricating, servicing oil and air filters, changing tires, watching oil levels in gear cases and engines, replacing fuses and touching up paint. Must be in sufficiently good health to pass the departmental physical examination and to be willing and able to work outside under adverse weather conditions; have the ability to establish and maintain good working relations with fellow workers, supervisors and the public. Must have the ability to read and understand technical English to read and understand operator manuals for the equipment to be used, as well as to understand oral instructions. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Must be able to see, read and understand operator manuals for any equipment required to operate; vision may be enhanced with optical devices; have night vision; see objects off to the side while looking ahead; see low contrast or camouflaged objects such as wires or pipes in the ground; hear the normally spoken word at 12 feet; hearing may be enhanced with a hearing aids; discern various odors; communicate effectively with residents and fellow workers; pull, push and carry 50 pounds; sit in excess of one hour; stand in excess of 30 minutes; walk a mile without a break; climb ladders and stairs; jump off equipment from a height of 2 feet; kneel 15 minutes at a time; pick up an item from the floor; determine if an item is hot, cold or slippery; understand work orders; write simple messages; work out of doors in inclement weather. MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from a recognized high school or be in possession of a G.E.D. certificate acceptable to the Superintendent of Education for Maryland; be able to write and read English; have one year of satisfactory paid employment in the operation of automotive farm equipment or trucks; must have experience with vehicles using pedal operated clutch and four speed manual selection, non-synchromesh transmission. Candidates will be tested in the operation of a vehicle with such a transmission system. REQUIRED LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES: Employees must possess a valid Maryland Class C Applicants may have no more than three points on their driving record. DESIRABLE ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: Commercial Drivers License - Class B. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Have a telephone available for notification of emergency recall. To assure that the applicant has no chemical dependency, applicant may be required to undergo a urinalysis once the job is offered and may e required subsequently to be tested. Have transportation available to get to and from work. Must maintain the ability to execute Essential Functions while in this class.
