Reporting to the Associate Director of Career Services, the Senior Career Counselor will provide professional, in-depth career counseling and job search coaching for a diverse group of undergraduate students, graduate students, and alumni of CU Denver. This position serves as part of the Career Center's professional career counseling team delivering career guidance and professional development through appointments, workshops, presentations, and events.

This position is also responsible for the management and execution of larger career center initiatives, which can include supervision of peer advisors, oversight of classroom presentations and workshop development, campus outreach, development of Boots to Suits mentorship program, redeveloping career resources (both print and web), and/or developing resources for students from historically marginalized groups.

Senior Professionals are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skills, personal accountability and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field. Work is performed fully independently.

Senior Career Counselor

What you will do:

  • Assist students with resume and cover letter writing, job searching, interview preparation and other career-related tasks and skills.

  • Guide students through selecting or changing a major and/or career.

  • Track appointments and maintain appointment notes in Handshake.

  • Deliver group presentations, in person and/or remotely, on a variety of career-related topics including but not limited to resume writing, interviewing, and job searching.

  • Provide and review assessments to help students identify interests, strengths, skills, and values using tools such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), CliftonStrengths, Strong Interest Inventory, card sorts and more.

  • Build relationships and facilitate programming with faculty, student groups, and other Student Affairs teams including first-year student departments (e.g., FYE, Pre-collegiate, Admissions, etc.)

  • Create, edit and contribute to career-related resources (digital, print, and video) students can access to assist them in their career journey.

  • Stay up to date on career related topics, such as the use of Artificial Intelligence, and share resources with team members.

  • Staff and support other LynxConnect events such as career fairs, the undergraduate research symposium, and others.

  • Assist in coordinating special events including panel discussions, networking events, workshops and presentations, seminars, outreach efforts, and program initiatives that relate to career development and job search activities.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications you already possess (Minimum Qualifications)

  • A bachelor's degree in Psychology, Communication, Sociology, Counseling, Liberal Arts, Education, Human Services, Student Affairs, or a related field from an accredited institution.

  • Two (2) years of professional level experience in career counseling, coaching, and/or advising and/or generally supporting culturally and ethnically diverse individuals' development in a higher education setting (internships may be included).

  • Experience presenting and/or facilitating workshops in person and/or virtually.

Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications to possess (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Master's Degree in Counseling, Student Affairs, Higher Education, Psychology, Human Service, or related field

  • Two years of experience providing professional career counseling, coaching, advising, or generally supporting individual's development in a higher education setting.

  • Supervisory experience

  • Professional training in and/or experience with various career assessments and tools such as MBTI, SII, and/or CliftonStrengths

Substitution: A combination of a bachelor's degree and related technical/professional experience may be substituted for the master's degree on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.

  • Outstanding customer service skills.

  • Demonstrated commitment and leadership ability to advance diversity and inclusion.

  • Strong counseling and natural leadership skills, ability to connect with students and assess their needs.

  • Develop and present workshops, seminars, outreach efforts, events, and program initiatives that related to career development and job search activities.

  • Ability to incorporate multicultural competencies when working with students, faculty, and administrators

  • Proficient with technology such as Microsoft Office 365 and videoconference/webcam applications (Zoom, Teams, etc.).

Conditions of Employment

  • Occasional work during the evening and/or weekends may be required.

  • This position follows a hybrid work structure where employees can work remotely or from the office, as needed, based on demands of specific tasks or personal work preferences. Working from the office is encouraged when working on tasks that require a high degree of collaboration.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $49,992 - $55,143.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.
