Under the direction of the Plant Manager, the Maintenance Supervisor is the leader responsible for the safety, regulatory compliance, operation, colleague development and leadership, and performance of the Des Moines, IA facility. This position leads a team of approximately 3 full time hourly colleagues. The Superintendent is responsible to lead directly and through others by providing direction, leadership, motivation, communication, training, coaching and discipline as needed and within site guidelines for all colleagues in their area. It is critical for the sites success that the Maintenance Supervisor can successfully collaborate with peers on site and beyond to deliver safe results.

This position has accountability to support the site across all shifts.

Job Duties

As a member of the Site Leadership team, the Maintenance Supervisor is responsible to play an active role in, and coach others in programs including human safety, feed & food safety, quality, environmental standards, Performance Excellence (CI). They are responsible to ensure their department is supporting the goals of the site and other individual departments.

  • Provide exceptional leadership and guidance:

  • Proactively work to ensure that all ADM employees, visitors, vendors and contractors understand and comply with the ADM safety policies and procedures

  • Support the production departments in the areas of safety and quality, including audit compliance

  • Align, deploy and execute the ADM Animal Nutrition Maintenance and Reliability vision/strategy

  • Maintain the operational equipment so that it is functioning as designed or expected

  • Manage and implement preventative maintenance and reliability activities

  • Lead and support root-cause analysis/5-Why processes within the maintenance team in regards to failures, EDT and execute plan to correct

  • Develop, review, and analyze maintenance/reliability maintenance metrics and performance.

  • Management On-Call

  • Assist the operations leadership staff in training operations personnel on proper operations, cleaning, lubrication, trouble shooting, and adjustments on the production equipment

  • Coordinate the maintenance program to schedule work with/around the production schedule

  • Maintain an effective equipment history, work history, and preventative maintenance program using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS). Ensure that all maintenance work is documented

  • Manage ongoing maintenance and reliability related projects (asset reliability and defect elimination)

  • Responsible for people management and development including retention, recruiting and team engagement

  • Identifies training opportunities, needs and facilitates training sessions for maintenance personnel, [and site personnel as applicable] focusing on precision skills training and development, safety practices and work standards

  • Ensures a healthy planning and scheduling process is functioning for the facility.

  • Leads the Operation of the Plant to maintain personnel and process safety:

  • Maintains an environment in which personal safety is the top priority

  • Ensures the team works safe and the department maintains compliance of all health and safety regulations

  • Ensures the operation of the site is carried out with all regulatory permits, laws & regulations and best practices

  • Aligns department goals with site goals and communicates the direction and priorities to the department leveraging a structured management system.

  • Coordinates operation of the plant to insure adherence to established product, environmental, safety, housekeeping & quality guidelines set by the company

  • Demonstrates ADM Core Values in decision making and actions.

  • Collaborates with work groups across the organization to develop a strategic vision for the department that is put into action through the department deployment plan.

  • Supports Quality and the Food Safety Management Systems, may be a member of the Food Safety Team

  • Acts as a key stakeholder to the plant leadership team.

  • Models the way of the Performance Excellence Journey:

  • Leads and Coaches the team to leverage continuous improvement tools to achieve department and plant KPI's.

  • Conducts Daily Review and Response and works closely with the Plant manager and steering team to adjust and adapt and to escalate situations that arise

  • Ensures that deviations from KPIs and incidents are driven to Root Cause elimination by team

  • Demonstrate commitment to improving safety, processes and efficiency of the plant by delivering the department deployment plan in both ‘what’ (metrics) and ‘how’ (means).

  • Work in collaboration with Centers of Excellence to improve technology and reliability of the operations.

  • Is an Effective Communicator:

  • Demonstrate strong communication skills in both face to face and written communication.

  • Interprets and ensures consistent application of organizational policies and procedures

  • Performs Colleague Performance Reviews and meets with Colleagues on a regular basis to review goals and individual development plans

Job Requirements:

  • Prior experience leading / supervising people.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (or equivalent experience) and 3 years of supervisory experience preferred.

  • Demonstrated self-starter and able to self-monitor with minimal oversight.

  • Results driven to provide support to achieve the goals established by leadership.

  • The ability to provide motivation to the direct reports and demonstrate leadership qualities to all plant personnel.

  • Demonstrated decision-making ability and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent organization skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks.

  • Computer skills and capability with Microsoft Products

  • Applicant must be able to work in all types of climates both inside and out including extreme hot and cold temperatures, noisy environments, heights, dusty environments, all of which require use of Personal Protective Equipment.

  • Ability to climb stairs, access ladders, catwalks and elevated working platforms across all hours of shift working time. Job also requires some lifting, sit and stand for long periods of time, work with heights, bending, kneeling and respirator qualified.
