Amazon’s network is a key differentiator for Amazon Cloud Computing and Amazon Web Services (AWS), enabling the global operation of thousands of applications across millions of servers worldwide. The Networking team develops and operates the network for all of Amazon including e-commerce products and cloud computing solutions. This network is industry-leading for its efficiency, throughput and reliability, and it is critical to the success of hundreds of thousands of AWS customers.

Our team owns the monitoring product for Amazon's network. Our goal is to detect any networking impact even before our customers can notice it. To achieve that, our product is constantly actively monitoring hundreds of thousands of network equipment across the globe.

We are looking for a Senior Systems Development Engineer who is passionate about optimizing existing architecture, designing new solution, raising the operational bar for their team, making our systems more reliable and available, interacting directly with our customers.

You will be responsible for projects, from the scoping and design, to the delivery. Participating in the implementation, but also leading other engineers to help you to achieve satisfying our customers.

Key job responsibilities

In this role, you will

  • Design, develop, implement, test, and document source code management, build and release systems, tools, and services.

  • Translate functional requirements into robust, efficient, supportable solutions that work well within the overall system architecture.

  • Evaluate and make decisions around the use of new or existing software products and tools.

  • Mentor junior engineers.

  • Influence your leadership in the strategy of the team.

Basic Qualifications

  • 6+ years of software development experience

  • 4+ years of development/programming/scripting language (Python/Java/Bash/Perl) experience

  • 2+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability, and scaling) of new and existing systems experience

  • 4+ years of systems development in an IT or data center environment experience

  • 4+ years of deploying and operating in a Linux/Unix environment experience

  • 2+ years of systems design, software development, operations, automation, and process improvement experience

  • Experience in a high-availability environment (like clustering technologies)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations

  • Experience taking a leading role in building complex software or computing infrastructure that has been successfully delivered to customers

  • Ability to dive deep to analyze complex issues, solve problems, and automate repetitive tasks

  • Excellent documentation skills

  • Excellent problem solving skills with a strong attention to detail

  • Experience with agile software development practices

  • Proven ability to troubleshoot large distributed systems and dive code to identify root causes

  • Experience with service-oriented architecture and current web service technologies

  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations

  • Experience taking a leading role in building complex software or computing infrastructure that has been successfully delivered to customers
