Position Summary
Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Faculty Engagement, the Head of Health Sciences is responsible for the supervision of six faculty librarians (five direct reports) and coordination of unit priorities including liaison support and services for the research, education, and teaching missions of the University and the Colleges and programs served by the unit. The role has local, state, and national responsibilities. The Head will be the primary liaison to affiliated medical residency programs and will collaborate with hospital librarians. It is expected that the Head will work with Deans, MSU administration, partner hospital administrators and librarians to advocate for and advance the integration and practice of health sciences librarianship.
The health sciences unit at Michigan State University (MSU) operates primarily out of the MSU Main Library and liaises to the College of Human Medicine, College of Nursing, College of Osteopathic Medicine, College of Veterinary Medicine, and the Communicative Sciences and Disorders Program, Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics Program, Public Health, and multiple undergraduate and PhD programs in the biological/biomedical sciences. This encompasses approximately 2000 academically appointed faculty; 10,000 students in undergraduate, graduate, and graduate professional programs; and 3300 medical residents in sponsored and affiliated programs across the state of Michigan. Michigan State University does not own a hospital but has community-based medical school campuses across the state.
Several health sciences colleges and programs have teaching and research facilities outside of East Lansing. The College of Human Medicine is headquartered in downtown Grand Rapids at the Secchia Center which is beside two MSU-CHM research buildings -- the Grand Rapids Research Center and the Doug Meijer Medical Innovation Building. Researchers in the Charles Stewart Mott Department of Public Health are in Flint, Michigan. The College of Osteopathic Medicine has teaching and research facilities in East Lansing, the Detroit Medical Center, and Macomb University Center in Clinton Township.
Some evening and weekend hours may be required.
Essential duties include:
Supervises and coordinates the liaison activities of five health science liaison librarians to build an effective team and ensure liaison coverage for subject areas/disciplines. Makes recommendations for staffing and liaison assignments and works with the Assistant Dean for Faculty Engagement to develop and implement programs to enhance liaison skills.
Acts as liaison to medical residency programs in the College of Human Medicine and College of Osteopathic Medicine. Providing research and guidance to approximately 3400 hospital residents throughout Michigan, in collaboration with hospital system librarians.
Coordinates growth and development of librarians by setting individual goals and objectives, training, responding to professional development requests, performing annual merit reviews, and direction toward reappointment and continuous appointment.
Collaboratively shapes and directs the strategic vision of the health science group (HSG) in alignment with the Libraries and the University strategic priorities.
Collaborates and consults with the Health Sciences Collections Coordinator to ensure that library collections reflect both the existing and emerging needs of liaison areas and the Head's strategic vision for health sciences at the Libraries and the University.
Collaborates and consults with other units within the MSU Libraries for any health sciences related policies, such as cataloging, interlibrary loan, and circulation.
