Summary

Staff Geologist works in CME’s Subsurface Exploration Group supporting field investigations, shop operations, and performing field activities at local and remote sites. This position is also responsible for reviewing, and classifying soil and rock core samples, coordinating projects with drill crews and geotechnical engineers.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Perform field investigations, office tasks, Work Zone Traffic Control (WZTC) support, drilling and coring support, and related activities required to support the operation of equipment used for drilling.

  • Provide clear and effective communications with relevant stakeholders including management, geotechnical engineers, clients, drill crews as well as utility locators, public entities and others associated with the project.

  • Review and classify soil and bedrock samples (in field or in office), and prepare, and edit field logs and review with Project Geologists and Engineers.

  • Review and evaluate asphalt and concrete core samples (in field or in office), and classify subbase materials, and prepare core summary information and reports.

  • Prepare and review subsurface exploration reports, test boring logs, test pit logs, well details, exploration location plans, GPS data, infiltration test logs and other required documents.

  • Perform preliminary reconnaissance of project sites to determine access points and identify potential terrain issues, utility issues, or other pertinent site information that could impact the project or access.

  • Conduct pre-site mobilization work such as obtaining permits, coordinating private utility location services, submitting UDIG New York Tickets for sites, and conducting field layout of explorations. Use of handheld GPS units is required.

  • Perform infiltration and / or percolation tests as required for projects.

  • Conduct field logging of samples during exploration operations and verify CME Driller compliance with appropriate industry or client standards. Includes support of drill team and working with sampling equipment.

  • Field requirements may also include digging test holes with hand tools or small power tools to support soils investigations.

  • Support WZTC activities (flagging, setting cones and signs) and understand WZTC requirements and work procedures.

  • Support drill and coring crews, as needed, as a driller’s helper.

  • Understanding of industry standard drilling and sampling procedures, drill rig operations and safety compliance.

  • Regularly discuss and review project details with project engineers and management, keeping team up to date on progress or issues.

  • Obtain training and understanding of basic survey equipment, GPS equipment as well as drill tooling used in the drilling and coring process.

  • Perform other shop, office and maintenance support duties, as assigned and/or needed.

Compensation: $23 - 27 / per hour

 

Qualifications and Skills

  • Must possess an Associates or Bachelor of Science degree in Geology or related area of study.

  • OSHA 10 Hour Safety Course within the first month of employment (CME will provide access).

  • Project Specific: may be required to obtain the 40 Hour OSHA  HAZWOPER training and the annual HAZWOPER refresher course, thereafter.

  • High degree of proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, Adobe, Google Earth.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

    Work Environment

  • Environmental components include office settings, laboratory settings and outdoor settings.

  • Outdoor work will vary between wet, dry, hot, cold and snowy extremes.

  • Fieldwork sites can be dusty, muddy, noisy and have difficult access and working conditions.

  • Workdays can range up to 12 hours in length with travel.

  • Ability to travel, up to 75% of the time with day travel. Overnight travel is also required and can vary depending on project locations.
