Description of Work Unit

Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Located an hour north of the Denver metro area, Fort Collins is a vibrant community of approximately 157,000 residents that offers the convenience of a small town with all the amenities of a large city. Fort Collins is situated on the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains with views of 14,000 foot peaks, and offers access to numerous cultural, recreational, and outdoor opportunities.

The Biosafety Office resides in the Office of the Vice president for Research. The Biosafety Office works with the Institutional Biosafety Committee ( IBC ), the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee ( IACUC ), Occupational Health, CSU research community, and others to support CSU’s biological research. The Biosafety Office helps mitigate the risks associated with biological research by developing and implementing appropriate biosafety and biosecurity practices and procedures, creating and conducting training programs, and ensuring compliance with regulations and guidelines. The end goal is to prevent or minimize personal, laboratory and environmental exposure to biological materials used in CSU laboratories.

The Biosafety Office also conducts laboratory outreach visits, provides guidance on equipment, processes, and procedures, develops incident response and emergency plans, investigates and provides correct measures for laboratory incidents involving biological hazards, and updates and notifies the appropriate CSU personnel and regulatory agencies as needed. The Biosafety Office oversees and provides support for research with biological materials and recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid research at the following levels of containment at CSU : BSL -1, -2 and -3; ABSL -1, -2 and -3; and ACL -1, -2, and -3.

Position Summary

The Assistant Biosafety Officer will be expected to possess the professional competency needed to provide support to CSU biological researchers by developing and reviewing specific activities and facilities for appropriate mitigation of risks and applying all relevant laws, regulations, policies, and guidelines. This position will also create and revise standard operating procedures and programmatic plans as well as conduct laboratory outreach visits and assist with training program and other duties as assigned.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Microbiology or closely related field

  • 3 or more years experience in biological research or Biosafety, or a combination of the two

  • Qualify for Registered Biosafety Professional or Certified Biosafety Professional within 5 years

  • Demonstrate ability to effectively communicate with peers and researchers, train researchers, and perform laboratory outreach visits

  • Demonstrate strong attention to detail and ability to document activities

  • Qualify for and maintain approval for access to Tier 1 Select Agents and Toxins

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Research and/or biosafety experience at CSU

  • Experience with biosafety and biosecurity associated with biological, animal, plant, aquatic, and insect laboratories and facilities

  • Experience developing standard operating procedures

  • Experience with developing safety and security training using universal design principles

  • Ability to serve as an Alternate Responsible Official

  • Registered Biosafety Professional or Certified Biosafety Professional
