Description of Work Unit

The Flint Animal Cancer Center ( FACC ) at the James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital is a world leader in veterinary oncology. Its mission is to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer in pet animals, translating research and knowledge to benefit people with cancer. Members of the FACC faculty are housed in a variety of departments across the college and university.

Position Summary

The Flint Animal Cancer Center ( FACC ) at the James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital is a world leader in veterinary oncology. Its mission is to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer in pet animals, translating research and knowledge to benefit people with cancer. Members of the FACC faculty are housed in a variety of departments across the college and university, including the Clinical Sciences, Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences, and Microbiology Immunology and Pathology Departments.

The FACC has a robust clinical, teaching, research, and outreach program. The FACC houses more than a dozen internationally recognized research programs that investigate animal and human cancers. The FACC clinic has cared for companion animals with cancer for nearly four decades with cutting-edge diagnostic capabilities and treatment modalities as part of a comprehensive, multidisciplinary, clinical service of medical, radiation, and surgical oncology and an integrated clinical trials service. The FACC clinical trials service is one of the largest in the country, averaging more than twenty trials a year. The FACC also trains future veterinary oncologists and oncology researchers in a variety of accredited programs.

The Director of the Flint Animal Cancer Center is a unique position that will lead the research, administrative, and service sectors of the Center. The Director’s responsibilities will broadly include leadership and vision for the center, oversight of teaching and clinical service programs, administrative commitments, and faculty support. The position may participate as a faculty member in an appropriate department with the option of participating in clinical service work, research, mentorship, education, or teaching.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience leading a large team with varying interests and disciplinary expertise. The Director must be able to connect with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders, provide vision for the future, and facilitate the FACC’s future growth. The Director will foster existing and new relationships with internal, external, and international partners, and widely promote the capabilities of the FACC . The Director will be passionate about training the future generation of researchers and clinicians and able to sustain and grow opportunities for the Center.

Effort Allocation:

  • Administrative/Outreach/Development – 75%

  • Research/Teaching – 15% (negotiable)

  • Clinical Service – 10% (negotiable)

The Director of the FACC is offered as a 12-month administrative professional leadership position. The Director may select to have a faculty affiliate appointment in an appropriate college and department. Desire to maintain an active research program is feasible not required.

The Director of the FACC will report to the Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences ( CVMBS ) or the Dean’s designee.

Moving expenses and sign-on bonuses are negotiable to eligible individual.

Required Job Qualifications

  • D.V.M, Ph.D., or M.D. degree (or equivalent)

  • Demonstrated excellence in scholarly and or clinical activity related to cancer

  • At least 5 years of leadership experience in a relevant setting

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Meet departmental requirements for appointment as an associate or full professor

  • Academic leadership experience

  • Experience in research, discovery, and/or advancement of clinical knowledge

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Experience in budget management, development, and/or fundraising

  • Demonstrated experience of successful collaborative teamwork

  • DVM preferred

  • Promote FACC interactions with internal collaborators, including but not limited to other veterinary clinical units, VHS , relevant centers, CVMBS , and CSU leadership

  • Promote FACC interactions with external collaborators including but not limited to University of Colorado Comprehensive Cancer Center and relevant veterinary and comparative oncology organizations.

  • Expand fiscal support and provide fiscal oversight of FACC activities as aligned with the mission and vision of the center and CVMBS

  • Clinical Service

  • Support the veterinary clinical services unit as they provide a high level of care for patients with cancer

  • Support clinical service faculty as they advance and improve the quality of our oncology specialty training programs and veterinary student education and training in oncology

  • Provide leadership to Increase funding to support all facets of oncology clinical services

  • Research/Teaching Service

  • Support the strategic improvement and expansion of basic, applied, and clinical research training programs including philanthropic giving and extramural-based support

  • Support education of pre- and post-veterinary trainees

  • Faculty/Staff Development and Support

  • Lead initiatives to build a cohesive team across all facets of the FACC
