Description of Work Unit

Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. The Department of Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences ( ERHS ) houses academic, research and clinical programs that address the promotion of human and animal health. The mission of the department is to deliver excellent education in environmental and radiological health to prepare students to contribute to society; to conduct state of the art research in human and animal health focusing on environmental exposures and clinical applications; and to promote excellence in outreach and service to the citizens of Colorado, the United States, and globally through information transfer, research, continuing education and technical assistance. ERHS is unique in its multifactorial approach to disease that involves chemical, physical, and biological factors. ERHS provides undergraduate and graduate programs leading to BS, MS and PhD degrees.

The Montrose Laboratory studies wildfire smoke health effects through a broad lens from cell to society. Projects focus on understanding the mechanisms underlying the deleterious effects of smoke and identifying vulnerable populations with the ultimate goal of improving health in wildfire impacted regions.

Position Summary

The Fire Management Board recently re-chartered the medical and public health advisory team ( MPHAT ) to focus on firefighter health and well-being with specific tasks to:

  • Support prioritization and coordination of research related to firefighter health and wellbeing, including environmental hazards and mitigation.

  • Leverage networks and expertise in medical, public health, mental health, and health care communities of practice and research communities.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in environmental epidemiology, occupational health and safety, environmental toxicology, or closely related field or Medical degree with research background.

  • Demonstrated ability to identify and synthesize relevant scientific literature

  • History of publishing literature review articles in high quality journals

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • An interest in working at the intersection of environmental epidemiology, occupational health and safety, environmental toxicology and forestry/fire management.

  • Knowledge of current policies and practices relevant to wildland firefighter health and safety at the federal level.

  • Experience planning, organizing and leading meetings, workshops, or symposia.

  • Website building and maintenance experience and skills.

  • This activity will require the postdoc to travel to key locations and meet with stakeholders.

  • Such locations and stakeholders will be identified in coordination with the mentors, MPHAT and JFSP .

  • These interviews will build upon the literature review findings to add practitioner-identified needs and gaps.

  • Be a liaison between members of the medical and public health advisory team ( MPHAT ) and between MPHAT and other firefighter health and well-being relevant agencies.

  • Generate a quarterly report of successes and challenges within MPHAT .

  • Generate an outward facing web page and/or FAQ sheet to communicate and report deliverables to stakeholders.

  • Coordinate quarterly MPHAT meetings and agendas.
