Description of Work Unit

Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Located an hour north of the Denver metro area, Fort Collins is a vibrant community of approximately 157,000 residents that offers the convenience of a small town with all the amenities of a large city. Fort Collins is situated on the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains with views of 14,000 foot peaks, and offers access to numerous cultural, recreational, and outdoor opportunities.

The Clinical Hematopathology Laboratory provides diagnostic services to several thousand veterinary clinics around the US and the world. We contract with every major private veterinary diagnostic laboratory and most veterinary schools to provide advanced diagnostics for canine and feline patients suspected of having lymphoproliferative disorders. We use the information generated by this diagnostic effort to perform research on lymphoma and leukemia in dogs and cats. The laboratory has 10 full time research technicians, 4 research scientists, 5 PhD students and several undergraduates.

Position Summary

A technician sought for diagnostic molecular biology and immunology for companion animals (canine and feline) in the Clinical Hematopathology Laboratory, Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology, Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. (https://vetmedbiosci.colostate.edu/chl/). The duties of this position include:

  • Carrying out PCR and flow cytometry assays on clinical samples from small animal patients for the Clinical Hematopathology Service.

  • Carrying out client communications (veterinarians are our main clients), entering sample data, reporting and other administrative responsibilities associated with the Service.

  • Maintaining the laboratory, including ordering, making media, refilling liquid nitrogen, keeping order and other responsibilities to keep the lab running smoothly.

  • Participation in clinical rounds and technical research rounds.

  • Supervising undergraduate and student hourly employees as needed.

  • Weekend and holiday shifts are included in this position

  • Although this is a 40-hour a week position, daily hours can vary based on samples received.

The personal qualities we are seeking are primarily meticulous attention to detail, a strong work ethic, the ability to work in a team while taking personal responsibility for your work, and the ability to communicate well with clients. One result of being employed in this position will be to gain substantial experience with PCR and flow cytometry assays.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts with some laboratory experience.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by start date of employment; the Microbiology, Immunology, and Pathology department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Science background. Veterinary experience is preferred but not required.

  • Some experience with cellular and molecular assays is desirable.

  • Specific skills are not required.
