Description of Work Unit

The Colorado State University Flint Animal Cancer Center’s mission is to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer in pet animals, translating research and knowledge to also benefit people with cancer. The Center attains its mission through an innovative study of cancer, thoughtful and compassionate care, specialized treatment options, and procedures. The Flint Animal Cancer Center continues to pursue a cure for cancer through its clinical oncology service, clinical trials, advanced clinical and research training for veterinarians, innovative research, and specialized consultation service. Clinical duties within the multi-disciplinary service will be shared among a total of 2 other surgical oncologists, 5 medical oncologists, 5 medical oncology residents, an oncology intern, a clinical trials intern, 2 surgical oncology fellows, 3 radiation oncologists, and 5 radiation oncology residents, and assisted by service specific talented technicians. The oncology service is a robust unit within the Small Animal Veterinary Teaching Hospital that closely collaborates with other hospital units in providing world renowned clinical care.

Position Summary

The Department of Clinical Sciences at Colorado State University seeks applications for a 12-month tenure-track Assistant, Associate, Full Professor in Surgical Oncology. This position will be housed in the Department of Clinical Sciences located on the Veterinary Health Campus of Colorado State University. The integrated oncology service at the Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital offers the latest and most advanced diagnostics and treatments in surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and clinical trials to a bustling client and referral base. This position will support clinical and didactic teaching in the DVM program, fellow training and mentorship in surgical oncology, graduate student/resident training, and research in the areas of veterinary and translational oncology. This faculty position will partner with other surgical oncology faculty members to provide full time (52 week) clinical service in surgical oncology. The Department recognizes that there is a need for an additional faculty to sustain clinical excellence and teaching programs, and for development of new knowledge so has created the currently advertised position. The language is intentionally broad to allow for maximum flexibility in meeting the selected candidate’s professional interests upon hire. Assistant Professor – Tenure track

The approximate commitment to clinical responsibilities will range from 18 – 22 weeks.

  • DVM or equivalent veterinary professional degree

  • Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons or equivalent

  • ACVS Founding Fellow or Fellow in Surgical Oncology or completion of a fellowship training program in surgical oncology preferred, though consideration extended to candidates having surgical oncology experience and or interest in completing surgical oncology fellowship training during employment.

Associate Professor – Tenure track

The approximate commitment to clinical responsibilities will range from 18 – 22 weeks.

  • DVM or equivalent veterinary professional degree

  • Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons or equivalent

  • ACVS Founding Fellow or Fellow in Surgical Oncology or completion of a fellowship training program in surgical oncology preferred, though consideration extended to candidates having surgical oncology experience and or interest in completing surgical oncology fellowship training during employment.

  • Evidence of maintaining an independent or collaborative research program.

  • 5 years of experience at the Assistant Professor rank or equivalent

Full Professor – Tenure track

The approximate commitment to clinical responsibilities will range from 18 – 22 weeks.

  • DVM or equivalent veterinary professional degree

  • Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons or equivalent

  • ACVS Founding Fellow or Fellow in Surgical Oncology or completion of a fellowship training program in surgical oncology

  • 5 years of experience at the Associate Professor rank or equivalent

  • Evidence of maintaining an independent and collaborative research program

Preferred Job Qualifications

Assistant/Associate/Full Professor – Tenure track

  • Experience in instruction of DVM students

  • Experience with mentorship of clinical fellows and other specialists in training

  • Evidence of dedication to the advancement of the field of surgical oncology

  • At Assistant and Associate /Professor rank, fellowship training in surgical oncology is preferred. For candidates without this training, training will be provided with an expectation that the candidate will become an ACVS Fellow in Surgical Oncology

  • MS or PhD and/or evidence of success in developing and or maintaining an independent research program
