The Alaka`ina Foundation Family of Companies (FOCs) is looking for a Laboratory Research Veterinarian to support our government customer located in Fort Detrick, Maryland.

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide clinical medicine services for laboratory animals, to include but not limited to non-human primates, rodents, and rabbits. Clinical medicine services include routine physical examinations and evaluation, and diagnosis and treatment of illnesses and injuries.

  • Perform surgical procedures as required for treatment of research animal illnesses or injuries and in support of research protocols.

  • Provide clinical oversight of veterinary technicians to ensure proper clinical procedures are followed.

  • Perform/assist with imaging procedures such as radiography and ultrasound.

  • Provide instructions to veterinary technicians and animal caretakers for any required treatments or other follow-up procedures or observations.

  • Document clinical and surgical procedures in animal medical records and surgery log books.

  • Document medical evaluations and treatments in animal medical records in the Subjective-Objective-Assessment-Plan (SOAP) format.

  • As required by specific animal research protocols, documentation shall be performed to standards required by the Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) regulations.

  • Operate medical and research equipment to protect laboratory personnel and other animals from infection by organisms and handling animals by appropriate procedures to protect coworkers from bites and scratches.

  • Monitor certification/maintenance dates on medical equipment and notify TPOC of certifications that are coming due.

  • Provide training to USAMRIID personnel as required. Some areas of instruction may include, but are not limited to, physical examination and observation of animals, surgery, collection of various bio samples, safe work practices, and procedures and topics of interest in the animal research environment.

  • Assist in reviewing SOPs for all functions and activities as performed by Contract personnel.

  • Provide clinical oversight of veterinary technicians in the surgery suite to ensure use of aseptic techniques during surgical prep, surgical procedures, performing post-operative monitoring until animals are returned to their cages, oversight of anesthesia provided and review anesthesia records for accuracy and completeness.

  • Other duties as assigned.

    REQUIRED DEGREE/EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:

  • Valid US state Veterinary license

  • DVM or equivalent. (If Veterinary degree was received through a non-accredited school, an Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates (ECFVG) is required.)

    REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of five (5) years' experience in laboratory animal clinical medicine and surgery, with non-human primate expertise, rodents, and rabbits.

  • Must meet Biological Personnel Reliability Program (BPRP) and Controlled Substance-Personnel Reliability Program (CS-PRP) requirements.

  • Working knowledge of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) regulations.

  • Knowledgeable in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

    DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

    Experience in biocontainment level 3 & 4

    REQUIRED CITIZENSHIP AND CLEARANCE:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen

  • Must be eligible for BPRP

  • Must be eligible to obtain Secret Clearance
