SCIS’ in-house team includes deeply experienced, and regionally located underwriters who average over 20 years of specialty workers’ compensation experience, as well as licensed claim advisors and premium audit specialists. This team is complemented by access to industry leading safety, loss control and claim services experts to provide you and your clients with best-in-class, real-time solutions that help mitigate exposures and contain costs.

Position Summary :

The successful candidate will develop, manage, and grow a profitable book of workers compensation insurance policies through independent agents and specialty producers. The candidate is responsible to generate new sales; successfully renew existing policies; and create new territories, products, and distribution relationships. The Senior Underwriter solicits new agents; reviews, analyzes, determines best fit, and approves or rejects both simple and complex workers compensation insurance applications. Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), along with time management, strong mathematical aptitude, analytical skills, and sales tenacity are requisite for success.

Responsibilities and Tasks:

  • Develop and manage a book of renewal business and agency relationships.

  • Generation of new sales volumes through existing customers.

  • Consistently establish and achieve aggressive growth, quality, and profitability goals

  • Monitor producer activity through submission reports, monthly production and claims reports.

  • Review accounts for proper classification and underwriting guidelines.

  • Prepare, maintain, and support the legal underwriting file on behalf of the Insurance Carrier

  • Manage risk control survey orders, review and initiate appropriate action when necessary.

  • Analyze and document accounts to determine exposure, class-fit and pricing. Receive and service policy change requests from distributors.

  • Listen comprehensively to distributors and policyholders; interpret comments or questions and respond effectively and appropriately.

  • Conduct internal self-audits.

  • Provide ongoing management of the business for underwriting quality and service. Gather information and report on competitors.

  • Explain products and services of the company, our insurance carriers, and service providers.

  • Work with all internal departments and our partners to resolve problems and maintain carrier relations.

  • Actively participate in underwriting audits with various partner carriers of MGA

  • Train and mentor Underwriting Assistants.

  • Emphasize benefits of the Company to producers and co-workers.

  • Participate as necessary on special committees and projects.

  • Create and maintain periodic management reports.

Experience and Skill Requirements:

  • An undergraduate degree preferred, or equivalent experience and background including familiarity with rating organizations and insurance regulation.

  • 8+ years insurance experience with at least 5 years of workers compensation background.

  • Working knowledge of Manual Rules and Classification procedures

  • A strong knowledge of various state workers compensation bureau rules and regulations.

  • Ability to function in a department producing multi million dollars in premium annually; handling a large volume of accounts generating premiums of greater than $100,000.

  • Strong communication and organizational skills.

  • Excellent sales and Communication demeanor.

  • Ability to organize work; perform with time constraints and be self-directed.

  • Strong mathematical aptitude.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

  • Ability to adapt to significant change (procedures, processes, and techniques).

Disclosure required under applicable state or municipality regulations: The expected salary range for this position is $125,000-$145,000 and will be impacted by factors such as the successful candidate’s skills, experience and working location, as well as the specific position’s business line, scope and level.
