Job Description

NREL is seeking an experienced solar resource/energy researcher to join the Sensing and Predictive Analytics group under the Power Systems Engineering Center (PSEC). PSEC supports the science and technology goals of the U.S. Department of Energy and NREL toward a sustainable energy future. The center works with the electricity industry to optimize strategies for effectively interconnecting renewable resources and emerging energy efficiency technologies in the existing electric power system. The center focuses on resolving grid integration barriers and providing improved control and management strategies for increased grid flexibility, consumer empowerment, and transportation electrification.

The candidate should have national and international collaboration experience on developing studies, analysis, best practices, standards and publications of solar resource information for solar energy application.

The job responsibilities include:

  • Collaboration and leadership with national and international groups of researchers (such as International Energy Agency) in developing best practices for solar resources applications.

  • Lead committees and work collaboratively with national and international counterparts to develop of radiometry standards (e.g., in ASTM and International Organization for Standardization (ISO)) to meet the current technological advances in solar resource for solar energy applications.

  • Lead day-to-day mentoring on radiometric calibration and measurement for the DOE Office of Science, Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program.

  • Conduct hands on research leading to improvement in understanding and quantifying solar measurement uncertainty and developing methods to reduce such uncertainty.

  • Publish impactful results in conferences and scientific papers that demonstrate NREL’s leadership in solar measurement and modeling research.

  • Lead ISO accredited spectral calibration facility at NREL and provide calibrations to internal clients and projects.

  • Build and maintain relationships with both internal and external clients of solar radiation instruments, models, and data.

Basic Qualifications

Relevant PhD and 9 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Master's Degree and 12 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 14 or more years of experience . Apply advanced engineering technical principles, theories and concepts. Contributes to the development of new principles and concepts. Considered a national subject matter expert. Demonstrates leadership in a number of areas including all team, task and/or project lead responsibilities (works independently). Demonstrated management of complex and/or impactful projects. Excellent writing, interpersonal and communication skills.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • International recognition as an expert on solar radiation measurement.

  • Leadership experience in developing solar radiometric standards in ASTM and ISO.

  • Knowledge and hands-on experience in DOE ARM operations of radiometric calibration and measurements.

  • Knowledge and experience in conducting spectral radiometer calibrations and solar simulator characterization.

  • Knowledge and experience of the National Solar Radiation Database (NSRDB) including characterization and validation of the NSRDB using ground-based instruments.

  • Working relationship with radiometer manufacturers including managing CRADA’s with those entities.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Researcher V / Annual Salary Range: $114,500 - $206,100

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
