Job Description Summary

The Software Engineer collaborates with a team of controls and systems engineers to develop next generation solutions aimed at delivering more reliable, clean, and efficient gas turbine power plants. In this position you will reshape the industry by using contemporary software development methodologies and proven processes to complement gas turbine technology and control system deployment strategies, enabling the adoption of the Edge technology stack.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with business leadership, technical experts, and end customers to understand top level software requirements.

  • Ensure on-schedule delivery of high-quality products aligning to business and technical requirements. Adhere to best practices, standards, and architecture principles.

  • Own development of multiple products, including the maintenance of legacy applications. Create technical documentation for software architecture, design, verification, release, and user guides.

  • Test and validate architecture and interface requirements for real-time controls system software, including configuration and application tools.

  • Work within and across Agile teams to design, develop, test, implement and support technical solutions across a full-stack of development tools and technologies

  • Collaborate with other team members, nurturing an environment of growth and forward thinking.

  • Cultivate and suggest ideas to enhance and refine standards, processes, and tools based on current technologies and cyber security principles.


  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related “STEM” Majors (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) from an accredited college/university

  • A minimum of 3 years of professional experience in software development (enterprise, web-based, SOAs, etc.) or Master’s degree with 1 year of experience in software development

  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Greenville, SC, Salem, VA, or Atlanta, GA

  • Must be willing to travel to GE and customer sites (up to 20%)

Desired Characteristics:

  • Experience developing in a variety of languages and technologies, including Java and JavaScript.

  • Experience with application frameworks such as Spring and Spring Boot

  • Experience designing and developing solutions in a microservices architecture

  • Experience in relational database usage

  • Experience in creating automated unit testing

  • Strong troubleshooting skills, especially in a production setting

  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities

  • Exceptional communication skills and the ability to interface with leadership with confidence and clarity

Technical Expertise:

  • Power generation domain expertise – understanding of gas turbine and combined cycle power plant technology and operation

  • Strong UNIX/Linux background

  • Experience with deploying solutions to converged or virtualized infrastructure environments

  • Working knowledge of software design patterns, test-driven development practices, and modern coding principles

  • Experience applying principles of SDLC and methodologies such as CI, Software and Product Security, Scalability, Documentation Practices, Refactoring, and Testing Techniques

  • Experience with performance tuning and memory leak detection

  • Hands-on experience with the following:

  • Creating and consuming REST web services.

  • Build automation tools and package managers

  • RDBMSs such as Postgres

  • Utilizing the Java ecosystem and object-oriented JavaScript, AJAX request and JSON-based RESTful web services

  • Messaging protocols such as MQTT

  • Docker and container technology

  • Understanding of real-time system capabilities and limitations

  • Graduate degree in Computer Science or in “STEM” Majors
