Director, Risk Transformation

Overview

Mastercard Risk has a significant transformation vision to continually enhance capabilities across the organization. There is significant complexity and interdependence within streams of work needed to deliver this vision, balance other risk priorities that naturally emerge, and overlaps with transformation and change in the broader organization. The Risk Transformation Office will need to establish an approach aligned with capabilities and priorities of the organization and closely track plans, activities, and outcomes, adjusting to evolving context.

In this regard, we are currently looking for a Director, Risk Transformation based in Peterborough, UK as part of the Mastercard Risk Transformation team led by EVP, Risk Transformation.

This role, in Mastercard’s second line of defense Risk function, consists in overseeing and facilitating risk transformation efforts across Mastercard. Focus is primarily on Group-wide risk transformation effort and program but where appropriate, will also engage and support regional / business 2nd line risk transformation effort. This Director, working with the broader Risk Transformation team, will lead key activities and projects in the risk transformation project office and team, and on prioritized risk projects also participate as a subject matter expert drawing on their prior experience.

Role

The primary responsibility is to provide hands-on challenge, support and communication to coordinate multiple MA Risk projects and engage stakeholders on dependencies beyond Risk. Working as part of the Risk Transformation team, they will, along with the Head of Risk Transformation and MA Risk leadership, ensure effort is prioritized with the right balance and ambition to achieve value-adding and coherent risk management capabilities. The role includes, but is not limited to:

  • Supporting and driving the use of leading practices to execute complex risk transformation initiatives spanning different large teams/ stakeholders and geographies.

  • Coordinating closely with leaders to drive alignment and dependencies between different priorities.

  • Providing leverage to Risk leadership and workstream leads in structuring Risk projects and engaging on ‘content’ of risk management outcomes for effective project delivery.

  • Balancing project resource, budget and approach to best achieve agreed outcomes and milestones, guiding project managers, analysts, and other resources.

  • Managing stakeholders beyond Risk contributing to transformation and manage dependencies to other pieces of work beyond Risk’s remit or with shared responsibility.

  • Tracking and providing regular progress, issue, and outcome updates internally to the Head of Risk Transformation and broader Risk team for working level and senior communication.

  • Maintaining awareness of broader risk and risk related priorities across the organization, balancing key priorities and flexibly and adapt the transformation program where appropriate.

  • Engaging with team members by creating a motivating work environment that recognizes, holds team members accountable, and rewards strong performance.

  • Supporting the assignment of clear tasks and objectives and establishing performance indicators for monitoring results versus objectives.

  • Leading or collaborating on ad-hoc and time-bound pieces of work of priority to Risk.

  • Engaging stakeholders across the 3LoD, teams and regions as appropriate, leveraging broader MA Risk and 3LoD leadership.

  • Proactively engaging and briefing executive management on risk transformation progress, achievements, challenges and asks.

All About You

  • Experience in risk and risk transformation across various businesses – regulated and non-regulated.

  • Experience of project / program management / delivery of risk initiatives that cut across the 3 lines of defense.

  • Experience / knowledge of risk management methods and frameworks.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead a multi-disciplinary and globally disperse / diverse teams.

  • Highly developed presentation, facilitation, and communication skills (both verbal and written), including with senior executives.

  • Pragmatic thinker who can distinguish timely, actionable, and effective actions and outcomes vs. complex best practice.

  • Risk mindset – ability to think outside the box and identify potential sources of risk, and their mitigation, and make decisions with available information.

  • Problem solving – ability to develop / partner to develop effective solutions to problems at hand.

  • Ability to engage with stakeholders from different parts of the business and build long-term relationships.

  • Proactive, structured, and collaborative approach, and an ‘ownership’, learning and growth mindset.
