The Pennsylvania State Police is searching for dedicated Firearms Background Specialist 1s (Legal Assistant 1s) to gather and review available information to develop preliminary approval or denial of an applicant's request to purchase a firearm or acquire a license to carry a firearm. Determinations are made in accordance with the operational requirements of the Pennsylvania Instant Check System (PICS). DESCRIPTION OF WORK As a Firearms Background Specialist 1, you act as an operator for the PICS. You gather and review information to develop preliminary recommendations for supervisory review for approval or denial of a firearm purchase or license to carry application. This includes PICS background check requests for evidence returns.

Duties include determining whether an applicant is the same individual who has been identified by a criminal history record, court ordered protection from abuse, or mental health record, and determining if an applicant is wanted based on the provided information. In addition, you follow procedures for apprehension of wanted persons which includes verifying the warrant with the issuing agency and having local police dispatched to the scene. You also gather information for supervisor review for the approval or disapproval determinations by interpreting current and former state and federal laws as they apply to a purchase, or license to carry.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

Full-time employment, 37.5-hour work week Work hours are rotating shifts including holidays and weekends, with 30-minute lunch. Salary:Selected candidates who are new to employment within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $39,003.00  (before taxes). Check your email, including spam/junk folders, for these notices.   REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

Three years of responsible clerical, enforcement or investigative work; or An equivalent combination of experience and training. Additional Requirements: All employees must obtain an active Commonwealth Law Enforcement Assistance Network (CLEAN) certification issued by the Pennsylvania State Police within the probationary period and maintain the same for the duration of employment in this job. You must be able to perform essential job functions. Legal Requirements:

You must pass criminal history and background investigations. This job title has been identified as performing critical duties. Prior to placement in this job title, the selected candidate regardless of their current job, must submit a Report of Medications for screening by the State Police Medical Officer. How to Apply:
