The Pennsylvania State Police is searching for a Firearms Background Specialist 2 (Legal Assistant 2) to join our team of investigators to help ensure proper firearm and permit to carry procedures are followed. The purpose of this position is to gather and review available information in order to approve or disapprove an applicant's request to purchase a firearm or acquire a license to carry a firearm. DESCRIPTION OF WORK The Firearms Background Specialist 2 acts as an operator for the PICS by making independent decisions on approval or disapproval of a firearm purchase or a license to carry applicant.

Duties include performing PICS requests for evidence returns per policy; determining whether an applicant is the same individual who has been identified by a criminal history record, protection from abuse order, or mental health record; and determining if an applicant is wanted based on the provided information. You also follow procedures for apprehension of wanted persons which includes verifying the warrant with the issuing agency and having the local police dispatched to the scene. In addition, you make decide either approval or disapproval determinations by interpreting current and former state and federal laws as they apply to a purchase or a license to carry.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

Full-time employment, 37.5-hour work week Work hours are various 7.5 hour shifts including weekends and holidays. Each shift comes with a 30-minute lunch. Salary:Selected candidates who are new to employment within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $44,010.00 (before taxes). Please check your email, including spam/junk folders, for these notices.   REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

One year as a Legal Assistant 1; or Four years of responsible clerical, investigative or enforcement work including one year of legal clerical support experience; or An equivalent combination of experience and training. Additional Requirements: All positions require the ability to obtain and maintain an active Commonwealth Law Enforcement Assistance Network (CLEAN) certification issued by the Pennsylvania State Police within the probationary period and maintain the same for the duration of employment in this job.
